Former Bristol nursing home aide indicted on sexual battery charge

Published August 26th, 2009 | 10 Comments

According to a report by the Bristol Herald Courier, a former nursing aide at National HealthCare nursing home in Bristol, Va. has been indicted on four counts of aggravated sexual battery.

Each count against James W. Wright, 35, stems from the investigation into the treatment of a different patient from 2000 to 2007. He is being held without bond at the Bristol, Va. Jail.

Patricia Davenport, a former nurse at the facility, is now a witness for the attorney general's office in the case. The Herald Courier quotes her saying the first instance of abuse she saw was when she looked into a patient's room and saw a woman with her shirt and bra shoved high on her chest. A nurse’s aide was standing behind the woman's wheelchair reaching around to fondle her breasts. “She just looked at you like ... she was so confused and hurt.”

Davenport told the Herald Courier, that the abuse was not a secret among nursing home staff. “When I talked to the rest of [the nurses], they said this has been going on for years."

A Nashville Scene report says Wright's co-workers were bewildered by what they describe as management's lackadaisical attitude toward their allegations. Many left in disgust. Wright only resigned in 2007, several months after a Bristol police investigation of the home. Det. DeeDra Branson, the officer in charge, refused to say what that inquiry revealed.

How horrible!
Thank God for the nurses who do actually care.

I agree Ms. Kennedy . Also, with the drastic shortage of nurses, I can't belive that someone could have been fearful of losing their job. ALL who knew and never took the issue outside the nursing home should be charged.

A call log is mentioned and how the home would call someone when they were short handed, and that was all they were required to do (didn't matter if anyone answered or came in). These employees did the same. They reported it in-house and that was all they were required to do. I'm sorry, but I would be shouting to the rooftops to anyone and everyone that would listen to me (including police, reporters, etc). From Ms. Watson's post, I imagine she too would not simply quit her job; she would not rest until something was done to protect her patients. Thank you, Ms. Watson, for caring so much.

I do in fact love my job. I couldn't imagine doing anything else. I take my job as a nursing assistant very serious. These are living, breathing humans who in some cases have no one but us to take care of them. And in some cases have families who aren't equipped to take care of them at home and have put their trust in us to take care of them. I myself cannot even imagine what these poor helpless incividuals ust have gone thru. But even worse why in Gods name did it go on for so long before something was done? My prayers are with all these people. Also, to Ms Davenport please don't give up on nursing because we need more of you. Thank you again for standing up.

Horrible..Just horrible.
I agree that all who turned a blind eye on this should be charged with aiding this creep.

RE: Melinda Watson
I commend you on the work that you do and I thank you for caring so much for those under your care. You have chosen a career where it's just not enough to show up and go through the motions to collect a check. A person in your profession has to truly love helping those under their charge and you seem to be one of those persons.
You are in a position to be a treasure to those you care for and their families who trust you to make their loved one comfortable. Thank You

I just read the story posted by Dave Jones and the whole thing is so discusting and sad. James Wright deserves the Death Sentence and the nursing home should be shut down.

Everyone take a look at the complete investigative piece.....the extent that this has been covered up is unbelievable!

It sounds to me, and it's just my opinion, that more than one person needs to be in the Bristol jail without bond

"Davenport told the Herald Courier, that the abuse was not a secret among nursing home staff. “When I talked to the rest of [the nurses], they said this has been going on for years.""

Those who knew this should be charged and held accountable for not stopping it LONG ago! They are just as guilty for allowing such abuse to continue.

This just makes me sick. I work as a nursing assistant in a nursing home and the thought of sexual abuse makes me so angry, How could anyone do this is so beyond me. I love my residents like they are my family. I work hard to get each and every one of them to trust me. Since this guy was observed acting inappropiately he should have been jailed at that time, not 2 yrs later. I commend Ms Davenport for standing up for whats right. May God richly bless you
