Earthquake causes Scott County's 911 switchboard to light up

This graphic from the Scott County GIS database shows the location of calls from residents reporting the earthquake - the green dots - and the reported epicenter as located by the USGS and Virginia Tech.

According to the United States Geological Survey, an earthquake with a magnitude of 2.5 on the Richter scale occurred in Scott County, Va., about 9:45 a.m. Friday.

Dr. Martin Chapman, professor of geophysics at Virginia Tech, said Tech’s network of seismic activity monitoring stations measured it at a 2.9.

Scott County 911 Director Tim Addington said 911 dispatchers have received numerous calls from residents whose homes were rattled by the quake. No damage has been reported.

The first call came from the Fort Blackmore area at 9:55 a.m., and calls after that generally alternated between locations in Nickelsville and Gate City, according to 911 dispatch center personnel.

Callers reported “a loud boom and structures shaking,” they said.

The USGS Web site indicates the epicenter of the earthquake activity was reported about 3 miles from Nickelsville, 10 miles from Dungannon, 9 miles from Castlewood and 17 miles from Bristol, Tenn.

Chapman’s stations recorded the epicenter’s location as being near Little Duck Road in Nickelsville.

It’s the first time “in quite a while” that something like this has happened in Scott County, Addington said.

The largest earthquake in Virginia’s history was in Pearisburg in Giles County in 1897, according to Chapman.

Chapman said “scattered earthquakes are not uncommon for Southwest Virginia.”

If there’s a marked increase in the frequency and strength of seismic activity in Nickelsville in the near future, then it might be something to worry about, he said. “There is such a thing as foreshocks to larger earthquakes. Usually, if in fact it was a foreshock, it wouldn’t be the only foreshock.”

Mr. Early, Mr. Stevenson - maybe you just haven't tried Satin. I sleep on Satin sheets sometimes, but ... well, I just can't get it into my head how this minor earthquake (and any other subject brought up here, from any news source) brings out the bible thumpers in such great numbers.

And the HATE this and HATE that evidently stems from the fact that THEY hate anything they don't understand, so they think WE hate them because they are so holy and righteous.

I'll take Satin, thanks. Satan, on the other hand .....

"What, you think God wasn't around when man discovered the use of science? He created science. Duh."

LOL, now this is funny.

One is fact, the other is faith. Two separate products. And they don't intermix. They can't, by definition.

Or is it simply your faith telling you that fact was created by God too?

CommentPeter Stevenson | 8/15/2009 - 10:13 AM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

Yeah, like Noah existed either. LOL THEY'RE STORIES PEOPLE! MYTHOLOGY! STOP TAKING EVERYTHING SO LITERALLY. JEEEEZZZZ!!!! I'm amazed you're not all neurotic from believing a literal interpretation which doesn't match up with reality.

CommentBrother Early | 8/15/2009 - 9:11 AM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

Willie, don't let up.They scoffed and made fun of Noah also..... he was deemed a fool, then one day............

CommentTiger Miller | 8/15/2009 - 1:58 AM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

oh.....and in keeping in context with the article, I never did feel anything. If I had, I would've totally been excited. Yeah....excited. Unless, you know, it had damaged peoples houses 'n junk. Then I'd be unhappy. NOW I'm going to bed.

Keep on pressing on, Willie. Who cares what these haters think anyway? I mean, read their posts....they're like a dog trapped in a hot car. LOLOL

Good night, again.

A) It's Revelation, not Revelations.

B) What, you think God wasn't around when man discovered the use of science? He created science. Duh.

C) Not all Christians live in fear and/or spread fear. I don't. And, what's this?, I'm not a loon. Nary one time will you find me on a street corner wearing a sign and screaming at people. But I might.....it would be hilarious to see the looks on people's faces as I scream in they face. (yes, I fully realize that was grammatically incorrect....laugh at it you buncha dried up hacks. You'll find that laughter is amazingly therapeutic.....oh, and that's in the Bible, too. In Proverbs, if I do recall).

D) The end WILL come. When, I dunno. The Bible says that even Jesus doesn't know. Only God the Father knows. And yeah, yeah, yeah, all you haters reading this will post your less than stellar ideas on it and try and belittle those of us who DO walk by faith. I could honestly care less, as I am at peace and, frankly, am going to bed as soon as I finish this because I never read what anyone says in retaliation anyway. I read AND study my Bible and really laugh at people who laugh at me for it. And I know that Jesus did, in fact, say that earthquakes would become more and more frequent in the last days. So, ALLLL Y'ALL mock it up all you please. Doesn't change God's Word one bit. He has the last say anyway so

NAR NEE NAR NEE NARRR!!!

Good night.

Wow -- I didn't realize that Scott County was that "diverse" - remote maybe -- but certainly not diverse......

CommentGreg Gilreath | 8/15/2009 - 12:13 AM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

I am sure, Willie, that back in the day when Jesus was walking the earth, there was little knowledge of the seismic realities that we have come to know today as the result of science. Without the needed science back then, the only explanation offered was faith-based.

I would like to think mankind is capable of progress in the last 2,000 years, and I pity those who still live the "faith over facts" route today, ignoring all that science and progress.

I'm sorry... This is bordering on being ridiculous. The King James translation says in Matthew 24:7 "For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places."

It is well established that earthquakes have been happening for millions / billions of years as tectonic plates crash into each other. Why is it in this tiny sliver of time that corresponds to your generation that the activities damning most of the world discussed in Revelations are upon us? With all due respect, you are being a little short sighted with regard to how times are changing within your (or my) generation.

CommentBrant Davis | 8/14/2009 - 10:00 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

No actually I read the BIBLE which Matthew 24 also speaks of the earthquake activity warnings.
Thanks for asking and GOD Bless YA

let me guess willie from first day you walked into a church they told you the end was coming am i not right?? "the day you die is the end"

if you would do a lil research you would find there are many earth quakes a day, in the past 7 days there has been 888 recorded in US alone http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsus/.
so how can you base this rare quake on the fact god is coming back real soon? "some one has been lying to you" they have always happened since the earth was formed millions of years ago and will as long as it exist.

Commentjohn wayne | 8/14/2009 - 5:51 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

Willie, have you lost your mind completly? You have got to be kidding with that crazy crap.

CommentBrother Early | 8/14/2009 - 5:30 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

At Weber City Church of GOD we're studying Revelations in the Bible, which speaks of the earthquakes as a warning to those who do not know GOD. GOD is attempting to show by small magnitudes now just what his true wrath will be to the Anti-Christ so that those not yet SAVED can REPENTmaking their transition from SATIN to our GOD.

The signs that the bible is forefilling are there already.Examples: Our food and water is already tainted. Crops don't grow in the soil.Foreign imported vegetables is tainted with insecticides.
Government wants us to value their money oiver GOD. We can't serve two masters and reach Heaven.

In the Town of Dungannon it shook my home,
rattled the windows and dishes in the cabinet.

Funny, I think we felt it in fall branch as well. felt a firm shutter to the house. I thought something fell off the bed upstairs or a tree fell or something, This is the only explanation as nothing was out of place at the home

CommentJay Johansen | 8/14/2009 - 2:17 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

I felt it in Bloomingdale. It rattled the walls a little.
