A Fall Branch couple being investigated since March for selling their prescription medications has been indicted by a grand jury.
According to a news release from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Mary E. Murray, 65, and Buster J. Murray, 82, both of 304 Butchertown Road, were charged Wednesday with maintaining a dwelling where a controlled substance was used and sold.
Sheriff’s investigators searched the couple’s home in April and found drug ledgers, five loaded handguns and approximately $33,000 cash. Investigators said the Murrays had illegally diverted large quantities of their prescribed medication and sold it to various people out of their home.
According to an earlier news release from the sheriff’s office, the Murrays admitted in April to selling their hydrocodone and Valium prescriptions obtained through licensed doctors.
WCSO Capt. Shawn Judy said the couple was accused of mostly selling Lortab. Judy said investigators believe the couple would fill multiple prescriptions for their medications early and at one time so nothing would seem suspicious.
Judy said investigators were tipped off to the drug activity due to a reportedly large volume of traffic coming to and from the Murrays’ home, which is located in a rural area.
Because of the couple’s age and in order to continue the investigation for additional suspects, the case was sent to the grand jury, which issued a presentment for the Murrays’ arrest.
The couple was being held at the Washington County Detention Center on $10,000 bonds each. The Murrays were scheduled to appear for a hearing during the next term of Criminal Court.

Well, from your comments towards another on these forums, in calling him "son", and the rabid, baseless statements that the elderly will be getting the shaft from any new health reform, I must conclude that you are one of those elderly. One who refuses to read or research, just parrot what people tell her. Ya know, cuz theres just not enough time for that. Its much easier to pick a "party", and cheerlead, no matter if its truth or just total garbage, right?
Mr. Wayne, pay close attention to pages 425-430. Page 341 is also of special interest. I thought I'd point these particular pages out to you since you obviously haven't bothered to read the bill when you falsely claim that our seniors are not going to be affected.
Mr. Wayne, you need to go read the bill for yourself if you don't think it affects the elderly.
I think their ages gave the story a more prominent position in the news, but I believe (and hope) it would have been reported in some fashion.
However, the number of drug arrests have been increasing at an alarming rate: especially the prescription drugs. There are so many robberies, murders, assaults, etc. tied to drugs. Our justice system is overwhelmed by the numbers.
Perhaps in the future, drug related crimes will be listed in a brief column in the paper (or the online version.)
you know, I bet if it were a couple in their 20s or 30s this would have never made headlines! Besides, do you people have any idea how many people out there sell their prescriptions? And no, I myself am not one of them, just ti clear that up. But really the people to blame here are all these doctors handing out narcotics like they are skittles! And if you think about it, how different is it than alcohol and tobacco companies selling beer and cigarettes, that stuff is to blame for ruining just as many lives as narcotics are, but you dont see phillip morris getting arrested. Cigarette and alcohol companies are just smart enough to gain wealth from other peoples stupidity, and thats just what this elderly couple was doing. But Im glad to see my comment stirred uo so much contreversy lol.
Making up stories and stats again, are we Jeremiah? You truly need your own radio show, you could make millions from the advertising. Just say whatever pops in your head, state it as fact, then let the sheep run rabid with it. What a poor excuse for an existence.
Who said that these criminals weren't working? Obviously they had a business and i'm sure there was work involved with maintaining their lucrative business. Also it's not a crime to be old and fortunate. However their actions weren't justified and they will receive their medicine.
Half the people around here on medicare are doing this. It's how the supplement their income. What's unique is that this couple actually dealt their TennCare/Medicare drugs directly. Most churchgoing, upstanding, visiting their grandchildren, older people around here prefer to sell the drugs to local dealers for cash rather than deal with the risk of direct sales. If you watch the house of many of the pill dealers in your own neighborhoods, you will see many cars driving up by senior citizens who then make cash transactions.
jane adams what a low life to take a jab at our president no where in the health care bill is it going to affect the SS or MC benefits for the elderly.
They should get life in prison! Which in this case would be what, like 5 to 7 years?
I just love how politics come into this. No where did I see Obama's name in the article. I know these people and they started dealing a long time ago when some one by the name of Bush was in office. You all do remember that is when all of this depression/recession started...don't you??????
Mom & Pops are true hustlers!!
mr. davis, not that it has anything to do with this story at all, i do not nor will i ever live in a $300,000 home and do not have 3 cars or three cell phones. i was simply trying to say that we WORK for what we have and don't resort to selling our prescriptions, we don't even have health insurance. get off your high horse!! i am not asking for anyone to feel sorry for me at all, i'm THANKFUL we're able to work for what we have. more than likely, if these people tried they could get help with foodstamps, and other assistance. anyway, there's no excuse for selling pills. no matter what the circumstances are.
Amen Mary. It is a disgrace how our elderly are treated. Now Obama wants to just get rid of them by refusing them treatment with Obamacare.
Most people don't realize what "fixed income" means for some elderly and disabled people. It makes the working poor look fairly well off.
That, of course, is not an excuse for selling the perscriptions, but we should not let our older folks live in such poverty they feel like they have to sell their meds.
Onehot mamma move from your $300,000 to a $100,000 home, sell one of your 3 cars, drop your cable for an antenna, get rid of 3 cell phones, then I may feel sorry for you.
ms. hensley, you say they're on a fixed income, huh? what about people like me who work and so does my husband to support our two kids, make a mortgage payment, two car payments, groceries, electric, gas, water, cable, phone, loan payments, so on and so forth. we struggle EVERY DAY!! i get so sick of people doing this and having thousands of dollars in cash just lying around their house. at their age, what do they need that amount of money for anyway, their living expenses can't be that much. sickening.
I always hear people say "We're on a fixed income" to garner sympathhy or haggle over price. I just say I'm happy for them, my income is broken.
Yes, I blame them. Drug abuse is ruining so many lives all around us and there's no excuse for their actions. I somehow doubt these two were selling drugs for grocery money, do you?
"Fixed income" and "$33,000 cash" shouldn't even be printed on the same page. I think the next questions should be something about tax evasion and Medicare fraud!
Their income is no more 'fixed' than he working poor, and we sure as hell blame the working poor when they deal drugs.
Then, shall we suspect all grandparents? No, these people have no excuse in choosing to deal drugs.
They are elderly and live on a fixed income...do you blame them?
