KINGSPORT — A wanted man rammed his car into three police cruisers in an attempt to avoid going to jail on an outstanding aggravated robbery charge, say Kingsport police. Police said the incident occurred Monday about 10:30 p.m. Police received a tip that Jonas Lefler, 24, 577 Big Ridge Road, Kingsport, could be found in a silver Mercury Marquis in the vicinity of Wilcox Court. He was wanted in connection with an April 2008 armed robbery of a man at the Roadrunner, 1600 W. Stone Drive. Police say Lefler used brass knuckles to hit a man described as a “slight acquaintance” during the incident. Officers responded to the area of Wilcox Court and found Lefler standing outside the car. As the officers approached, Lefler ran to his car, jumped in, backed up and drove off at a high rate of speed, police said. In his attempt to escape, Lefler allegedly struck police cruisers driven by Sgt. Gary Keene, Patrolman Seth Brumfield and Lt. Mike Roark. Police said Brumfield chased Lefler after he struck Keene’s patrol car. Lefler’s car then struck Brumfield’s patrol car and spun around as they were negotiating a turn toward Wilcox Drive. Lefler then accelerated and struck Roark’s vehicle head on, police said. At that point, officers were able to take Lefler into custody. His passenger, Sherry Greene, 34, 308 Newland Ave., Kingsport, was also arrested. Police said she was found in possession of Valium and marijuana. Police also found a loaded .22-caliber pistol and a shotgun in the car. Both were determined to have been stolen. Lefler’s charges include aggravated robbery, three counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, felony evading arrest, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon, possession of stolen property, reckless endangerment and resisting arrest. Police charged Greene with public intoxication and simple possession of Schedule VI and Schedule IV drugs. “Everybody’s OK,” said Kingsport Police Department Deputy Chief David Quillin. “It appears that the damage to each of those vehicles was over $400, but each of them are drivable.” Quillin added that they wouldn’t know the exact cost to repair the damages until the cars are taken for an estimate. Lefler and Greene have been arraigned in Kingsport General Sessions Court. Their next court appearances are set for Thursday. Lefler remains jailed in lieu of a $200,000 bond, while Greene’s bond is set at $3,000.

No problem, Harvey. I've done the same thing myself.
i can't completely disagree with mr. harvie christian...although i have in the past....
i called the cops recently (not KPD) but it was within the tri cities region.....there was a drunk driver involved, vandalism involved, violence involved....stolen vehicle involved....
and an HOUR later...i called back to them NEVERMIND because an officer had still not shown up to the scene. was the problem solved? NOOOO. there was still a drunk driver...still a stolen vehicle...still damaged property, but my lord....
all my friend kept saying is, "good thing nobody was being beaten to death!" ....
nobody knows the true story until they were there to witness it. who's to say she wasn't forced into the car, or that she's not the one who called the cops? after the incident i encountered (which desperately needed cops) i don't leave anything to be out of the question.
This guy has a family a wife , teenaged son and a baby on the way . What he should have been doing is trying to work and make an honest living to support his family instead of leaving all responsiblities to his wife. It is very hard out there for all families, he should try and make it easier for his family.
I think people just want to jump on here to say crap about KPD when they see KPD in the paper. I also don’t believe these same individuals read what the story says before they bash them. Trust me I am no fan of the KPD as I have been pulled over in my 8 years of driving and had more traffic violations ( for stupid crap such as altered suspension, gas tank being to low, exhaust not exceeding the perimeter of the vehicle) than probably anyone who reads the paper.
To fix all the post, there was another woman who went to jail for being drunk walking in the middle of a ramp to John B. Dennis. If she was hit by a car because of this, picked up and raped because of this, or the officers picked her up and dropped her off at home, then you same people would be bashing the police about how they responded. It doesn’t matter what the KPD does it will not please everyone, but the easiest thing you could do it at least read the article through and make sure your on the right post. If reading it and posting doesn’t satisfy you then see the judgment in court.
For this article I am glad KPD took this guy off the streets before it was my vehicle he decided to run into. Also for the “pit” I don’t see anywhere that it was attempted. It states that the subject tried to make a turn to another road when he struck the second officers car causing him to spin out and then strike the third car. This if you would think clearly could be cause as a police officer was trying to get close maybe to attempt the “pit” and this suspect wanted to try an avoid while taking another street. Once again the full details of the story are unknown as we do not have access to the police camera.
I personally appreciate these officers taking this guy and girl into custody. If this is the new world our children will be growing up in wow I honestly don’t know how they will survive. There are all sorts of road rage, drugs, drinking and driving, and just morons out on the road today. This has increased significantly since I was a child and I cant wait till I am that old person trying to get to the store and make it home before I get ran over. (sarcasm intended.)
Wow! There must have been a breakout at the insane asylum, going by these posts defending these two and blaming the police for entrapment.
Sorry Mark M. I guess I got this story confused with the original one that came out reporting a woman being picked up just off the DB ramp for public intoxication. I do wish they would leave stories as originally written rather than changing them. I agree, they did have probably cause to search Ms Greene.
Mark M. These people were not a couple. Read the story. It was two entirely separate incidents. The two people were nowhere near one another and had nothing to do with each other. Times News just reported on two separate incidents in one story.
Harvey! Have the police give the woman a courtesy ride home? Ms. Greene was in a car with a suspected felon who was fleeing the police and ramming them with his car. Anybody in that car should be suspect of wrong doing. "Birds of a feather" would apply to this situation. When the police found a shotgun and handgun in the car I think the police had even more of a reason to suspect Ms. Greene.
I don't know about this particular incident or this couple, but often the police are familiar with many of the felons or would be felons. They have seen them come in and out of court since their teenage years. Many times they are familiar with their families. When we read stories in the newspaper, we are usually reading articles gleaned from police reports which are cut and dry. The reader (and often the reporter) doesn't know the background, nor does the reader know what the police officer already knew about the people involved in crimes.
As far as fining people, paying money is often a better deterrent than a night in the drunk tank. Time and money is spent processing people who can't handle their liquor or drugs. If there weren't fines, money would have to come from somewhere to make up the difference. That means more taxes. I believe if you break the law, you have to pay.
I never could understand how the police could charge someone with running into their car when the police officer intentionally performed the pit maneuver to cause the other car to go into a spin. The police officer intentionally used his car as a weapon to ram the other car. There are other charges I can see they could charge the driver with many other things but as for striking that one policeman's car, that should be an invalid charge.
Well, I think the fact that she was drunk in public did not give the police a valid reason to search her for drugs. Also if the jail is like it is in many places the jail charges for room and board for drunks to stay overnight or however long they stay. Also drunks are usually fined for being drunk in public. Thus it is a money making operation. A simple courtesy ride home would have sufficed and got the drunk off the streets.
Great Job KPD - I guess that goes to show that once in a while things do turn out the way they should. This guy apparently was a menace and the streets are safer as a result of the KPD.
GREAT JOB KPD
Another violent criminal off the street.. Great job KPD !!
Harvie Christian: Your intellect and problem solving skills must be stunning. Be sure and post references as to where you can show that the city makes money on public drunks. The female was also charged with simple possession.
I think some would agree that you should at least think before you post on here.
Good job KPD.
Morons.
LOL they should of shot him instead of the 2 pitbulls this weak! He looks more dangerous!
I guess they will go to jail now, make bond & await trial for about 2 yrs and be free & be back to square one for 2 yrs!!
I think the police should have given the drunk lady a courtesy ride home instead of looking for reasons to take her to jail. Are they really that hard up for money that they have to charge everyone with a crime in the hopes of making money off them?
Clearly a violent psychopath. Hopefully he can be locked up permanently so he is no longer able to terrorize society.
