Motorcyclist accused of popping wheelie on Center Street arrested; woman found stumbling on John B. Dennis

Published June 30th, 2009 | 12 Comments

KINGSPORT — Kingsport police arrested a motorcyclist Friday accused of popping a wheelie less than a block from the police station, while an intoxicated woman was taken to jail after “stumbling almost into traffic” on John. B. Dennis Highway.

About 9:50 a.m. Friday, a Kingsport Police Department officer saw a 1996 Suzuki driving recklessly on West Center Street. After the motorcycle passed Kingsport City Hall, it accelerated quickly in traffic and popped a wheelie.

The officer immediately initiated a stop on the motorcycle. The rider, Travis Gale, 28, of 1713 Ridgeway Drive, was found to have his license suspended in January due to frequent traffic violations.

Also, a check of the motorcycle’s Kentucky license was found to not be registered. Gale was arrested and charged with reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, and violation of registration law.

About 6:20 a.m. Friday, Kingsport police were called to the Wal-Mart on Fort Henry Drive in reference to a public drunk. Wal-Mart personnel reported a woman had repeatedly gone into and out of the men’s restroom and was stumbling throughout the store.

Security officers told police the woman had left the store and was last seen walking on Fort Henry Drive near the intersection of John B. Dennis Highway, wearing a red dress.

According to a police report, the woman was found “walking in the middle of the entrance ramp to north John. B. Dennis. Immediately I noticed the female was stumbling almost into traffic.”

Police report the woman, Heather Leanne Stapelton, 28, of 325 Twin Hills Drive, had trouble standing under her own power. She almost fell down twice while speaking with officers, and spoke with slurred speech.

According to police, Stapelton said she “had been partying last night.”

A search of her purse found four pills believed to be Alprazolam and seven pills believed to be Promethazine. She had a prescription for neither of the medications, police said.

Stapelton was arrested and charged with possession of controlled substances and public drunkenness.

Mike Jones,

Every time I try to tell you this, my comment gets deleted; but, I am going to give it another go. You are completely ridiculous. You lack any rational thought or common sense. Kingsport PD wears a gray and navy uniform. Sullivan County wears tan and green. You seriously need a new phrase. Do you honestly expect anyone to take you seriously? What is your reasoning for hating law enforcement? I seriously hope, for the sake of our society, that you never chose to reproduce. And if you have not, please get a castration immediately.

As a motorcyclist for 40 years, a life member of the AMA and a former state ambassador for Women On Wheels, I applaud the efforts of the KPD in catching and taking down this "biker" who will probably not live long enough to see his 40's. I am shocked that stupid kids on "crotch rockets" think they own the streets and can do what ever they want without consequences. No i am not an old fuddy duddy. When I was young, I use to showboat on motorcycles as well, but I never did it on the streets, my "fun" was done in fields and parking lots that I could legally ride in.

Thankfully the KPD took this young, stupid individual and hopefully impounded the bike, off the streets for a long time. Perhaps he and others like him, can form a club and rent time at the local drag strip to show off their talents. That is where this crap belongs and not on the public roads where it gives all motorcyclists a bad name.

And Yes, I do ride sportbikes in addition to cruisers.

You know, sometimes the police are busy answering other calls. As they get available they go catch other calls. Why not look for the positives in these stories instead of running these people in the ground? What if the girl had gotten out into John B Dennis? It's completely the girl's fault that she was in this position. You determine your own destiny.

"Isn't Promethazine just Phenegran for nausea?"

yes. it is. It is also a RX only drug, and can be abused and addictive all on its own. So, yes Lisa. If you have a valid RX for it...keep it in the original container if you must take it with you. I would hope that you aren't driving anywhere while taking it, though. Slows your reaction time.

I'm not a big fan of cops but "blue suited Barneys" that' not even funny! You can think of something better than that.

Commentjim morrison | 6/30/2009 - 8:42 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

....And Mike Jones must be first in line buying all they got! The "Blue Suited Barneys" are selling to the "Goobers" now, right? LOL! One would figure that the KTN would block comments such as this but....it's alright as long as it slams the PD. But, leave it to "Goober"...no point made at all.....just childish name calling directed towards police and those that support local law enforcement. I think I'll go down to the doughnut shop and buy a few Oxy's from my local cop on the beat, now. Such garbage!!!

From what I understand, she actually had several bottles of Narcotics, but the blue suited Barneys confiscated them and are selling themselves for personal revenue!!

CommentMike Jones | 6/30/2009 - 5:57 PM - (CommentSuggest Removal )

Promethazine is not only used for the treatment of motion sickness, nausea, and vomiting, but can also potentiate the effects of narcotics. Maybe that's why they charged her for them.

Isn't Promethazine just Phenegran for nausea? I know because I have a prescription for it for when I experience nausea with severe migraines. Is it against the law to have it without a prescription? Sometimes I will put a few in a Tylenol bottle to keep from carrying so many bottles. Pretty soon, Tylenol will be against the law.
