ELIZABETHTON — For nearly all the years since the Civil War, Carter County has been represented in the Tennessee House of Representatives by a Republican. That could change on Monday when Tennessee Republican Party Chairwoman Robin Smith announces whether the current representative, Kent Williams, will be kicked out of the party. Smith is contemplating the action because Williams sided with 49 Democrats to become the speaker of the House in January. She has accused Williams of breaking his signed pledge to vote for the nominee of the Republican caucus. Williams has said he would still consider himself a Republican no matter what the party executives do. He said he would not join the Democrats but would serve as an independent if he was ousted from the GOP. Williams hopes he will be able to stay a Republican. “I think most of the Republicans in the House want me to stay, it is just a handful that want me out,” Williams said. “I think the party is reluctant to take the action and lose their majority in the House, but I think Robin Smith has been pushing it. “It is a shame one person has so much power in the party. It is like a dictatorship,” Williams said. Williams admits there are many rank-and-file Republicans across the state who are angry with him and he said he has met a few who have told him they would be coming to Carter County two years from now to help defeat him. “The party has used this to raise a lot of funds,” Williams said. “I think we should be trying to beat Democrats instead of fellow Republicans.” Williams said he believes the Republican Party has shown some reluctance to remove him because of the strong support he has received in Upper East Tennessee. Williams said he has always believed that the people of Carter County were his boss, not the party leaders in Nashville. “I am not a yes man. If you have to be a yes man to the party leaders, then maybe I don’t belong. I am not anyone’s puppet, not the Republicans and not Jimmy Naifeh and the Democrats. I am a yes man for the people of Carter County and now that I am speaker I am a yes man for the people of Tennessee. They are my boss.” Williams said things are going well in the House, with committee meetings set to start after Gov. Bredesen’s State of the State Address on Monday. One thing that will be behind normal schedule is work on the budget, which will be delayed until the state gets a clear picture of what funding it might get from the federal infrastructure stimulus package. “We think we are going to get around $4 billion, but nothing has been decided yet. We don’t want to start work on the budget and then have to do it over again.” While Williams said he is opposed to some of the things in the federal package, he said the prospect of passing a state budget without it would be a “nightmare.” “We would have to cut at least $900 million. That would mean tremendous cuts to services some of our most needy citizens depend on, our child services and services for older people.”

And so you witness here on this small forum just what keeps Tennessee ranking 48th in education, among other things, and the laughingstock of most of the US when they voted against Al Gore as president. This is ridiculous. Tennessee is falling apart and what are the Repugs in power doing? Ruling on getting rid of abortion, of course. The state has a sales tax rate that's among the five highest in the 50 states. What are they ruling on instead of REAL tax relief? Expanding areas where handguns can be carried. Jobs are being lost like water through a sieve but what are they focusing on? "The way appellate and state Supreme Court judges find their way to the bench." (AP) Tennessee Repugs are in Pit Bull mode. Or spoiled brat mode. They want what they want, and they want it NOW! Who cares who gets left by the wayside? Who cares about those who don't want that kind of legislation, but would prefer the state work on helping education, jobs and a reasonable sales tax (so that millions of dollars in purchases and sales taxes stop going across state lines). But, yeah, let's just focus on Kent Williams "lying" because, after all, he's the first Tennessee Republican who's ever told a lie!
Ahh....Yes, you are correct Liberal Larry. That happened in 2007, but he was also denied in 2005 because two republicans voted for a democrat. It's funny how things happen, huh? It amazes me that the only time you hear of bi-partisanship and "let's hope they can cross the isle" is when it benefits the democrats. Let's hope Phil Roe votes his conservative principles like he was voted in to do by this wonderful area. Who cares if he holds hands with Pelosi or not.
How many people remember that Sen. Ron Ramsey was elected as a Democrat??????????
Actually, he has many supporters in the House, both Democrats & Republicans. I too will be glad when this is over because the Speaker will be able to do his job without the political grandstanding of the TNGOP. If you'll follow Senator Corker, you'll see that Williams isn't the only Tennessee representative that is able to work on both sides of the aisle successfully. We only hope Congressman Roe does the same.
Kick the Rhino out! He lied to many people. I will now await Eric Taylor's bashing. LOL
"Republicans are the party of integrity" LOL. Who's this Doug Miller guy, and what small island has he been living on the past 30 years?
Republicans are the party of integrity. Mr Williams has proven himself unworthy of the title. No great lose to anyone if he is forced to live the remainder of his hopefully limited political career as an outcast independent.
Anyone remember that Rusty Crowe was a Democrat when he was elected, but when it looked like the Republicans were going to be in power - via the Gingrich Contract on America - he switched parties in a hurry. Everyone in the Repuglican party was all for that clever move. Furthermore, you all should hang your heads in shame over the shenanigans of The Mump. Had this been Democrats doing the stuff he's done, you'd have wailed at the top of your collective lungs about his behavior. Because he's your Repuglican, you will defend him to the death, I guess, and just let the party eat its own. What a mess. Glad I'm out of it all. Glad they're yours and not mine.
Mister Thomas you have proved to me again that most Republican have amnesia and cannot remember the first 6 years of the republican rule that also included Conservative Democrats voting for the most damaging legislation policies that this country has ever seen since the Hoover administration. We tried to warn you about these people, but you keep voting for them no matter what they did and now we will all have to pay the price. You were used, manipulated and outright lied to by these Right Wing Washington Elites who didn’t just destroy income from 1 spouse in the family but both. Let them kick him out and we will show the People of the Great State of Tennessee what a real people’s party look like. Oh yea and 1 last thing, I sure hope the Kool-Aid you guys have been drinking runs out soon.
My analysis is that the Tennessee Republican Party will take action on removing Rep. Kent Williams from the GOP.
With Williams acting as the head of the House GOP, the House Republican Caucus are cut out of the information loop. Ejecting Williams, puts the GOP elected leadership back in the management loop and it should put Mumpower as the senior Republican in the House to represent all Republicans in House matters.
I feel the decision of the GOP will be revealed Monday before they go back in session Monday evening. They want him ejected so as to more accurately reflect the facts as they are in the Legislature. At this point, the GOP is a majority in name only.
They may also want to avoid any more embarrassment or any other future behavior problems that Kent Williams might get himself in.
The Republicans are the majority in name only….a dangerous circumstance, as the Democrats can say,"well, you are the majority and responsible for …..for whatever. The Republicans need to be masters of their own destiny. Getting rid of Kent does that.
I predict Kent Williams will be booted out of the GOP.
The irony of this situation is that the pubbies in Nashville need Mr. Williams now that he has been elected speaker, more than ever. They need his vote. To throw him out of the TNGOP would be spite, something of which they are certainly capable. They should embrace him as their speaker and coddle him as they do their precious pharma friend. Mr. Williams is also in a unique situation, being a RINO as many have called him, may endear him to the Democrats much more than a Mumpowder speaker could have. He has the opportunity to be the voice of the people. Another reason the pubbies should keep him, is that the Democrats will be waiting with open arms to accept him as a party leader, which will go far in insuring his re-election(s).
Whether he's a Republican or an Independent after Monday let's hope all the nonsense will be over. This has been nothing but a circus sideshow that has kept our "leaders" in Nashville bogged down in political wrangling and taken the focus off what's important, getting this State back on the right track during a serious recession.
Jeff
You read what the story said. GOP don't want him. I believe you quoted you unbelievable buddy Obama on this one.You may have had a GOP President. But your DEMs wrote all the laws and rules.
Lay in the bed you made.
Kent Williams is what I call a people's Republican and the Right wing /Washington style Republicans that are running the party in Tennessee are going too failed. We had 8 years of a Repub rule and it broke the country we cannot allow the same mentality to take control of our state and ruin it. I see a group of moderate Repubs coming forward in the next 2 years that will work with the Dems to solve the state’s problems and remove these dictators from power.
You can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig. Williams is a democrat posing as a republican. That simple.
Kent Williams is one of the best Republicans in our government and some of the others think they walk on water. If you oust this man don't come this way because you will not be welcome.
