Deputies serving order of protection find meth lab during ‘cook’ in Hawkins

ROGERSVILLE — A Hawkins County man indicted last week on charges of manufacturing methamphetamine was arrested Wednesday afternoon after officers serving him with an order of protection allegedly found another meth lab in his home in the midst of a “cook.”

Shannon Todd Coffey, 38, 143 Greenview Drive, Whitesburg, was free on bond stemming from his arrest in January on meth manufacturing charges when Hawkins County sheriff’s deputies came knocking on his door Wednesday.

Sheriff Roger Christian told the Times-News Thursday that when the officers approached the residence, they detected the familiar odor of a meth lab in operation.

Detective David Benton, who was among those officers, stated in the arrest warrant that prior to making contact with Coffey he noticed a “homemade gasser” containing what was believed to be anhydrous ammonia lying outside the residence.

Officers reportedly knocked on the door for about 30 minutes before Coffey came to the door. Coffey was then told he was being detained for investigation into meth manufacturing, and a search of the residence was conducted.

Among the items allegedly seized from the residence was a mason jar containing a coffee filter with a brown paste substance. Other components and ingredients were also allegedly found, as well as several corners of plastic baggies, one of which allegedly contained a white powder residue believed to be meth.

Deputies also allegedly found a bottle of muriatic acid on the back porch and an opened 50 pound bag of ammonia nitrate in the shed.

Coffey was charged with manufacturing meth, promotion of meth manufacturing and felony possession of drug paraphernalia. He remained lodged in the Hawkins County Jail Thursday on $25,000 bond.

Last week, Coffey was indicted by the Hawkins County grand jury on charges including manufacturing meth, promotion of manufacturing meth, possession of dihydrocodeinone with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Those charges stemmed from a Jan. 22 search of his residence which coincidentally was initiated when deputies were attempting to serve Coffey with a domestic violence and domestic vandalism warrant and allegedly detected a meth lab cooking.
