A sign over Interstate 26 was removed Wednesday by state inspectors after they found it was damaged.
The inspection and removal of a fog warning sign at mile marker one at Interstate 26 and Stone Drive came one day after a similar sign collapsed over Interstate 65 in Nashville.
The Tennessean reported Wednesday that Tennessee Department of Transportation officials were sending the steel from the collapsed sign to a laboratory to determine why the structure broke down.
Cantilever signs are directional or informational structures that typically have one steel leg bolted to the ground and hang over the road.
TDOT Community Relations Officer Travis Brickey said the discovery of the damaged sign in Kingsport was part of inspections being done throughout the Region 1 transportation district on Wednesday.
“Upon inspection, they did find a crack at the base of the sign where it mounts onto the footing, and it is being brought down,” said Brickey of the cantilever sign at the top of the onramp at Route 11-W.
“There are 24 counties in Region 1 going from Monroe to Johnson County, encompassing Knoxville, Oak Ridge, Greeneville, and the Tri-Cities. We have four inspection teams that go out every day and inspect bridges. (Wednesday), those teams went out and inspected 173 cantilever structures in the district.”
A breakdown of those specific cantilever signs and their locations follows:
- Sullivan County: 14 signs.
- Unicoi County: four signs.
- Washington County: three signs.
In comparsion, Brickey said inspectors in Knox County were having to examine 110 signs before the end of business Wednesday.
Overall, TDOT will be examining 678 cantilever signs throughout Tennessee this week.
