The Johnson City Radio Controllers draw RC enthusiasts from throughout the region to their flying field in Gray. Located at 190 Lancaster Road, you'll find everything from helicopters to jets buzzing through the air during their monthly meetings.
About 100 people from Jonesborough to southwest Virginia are members of the group. They lease their miniature airport -- complete with paved runways -- from Johnson City, as the site used to be a landfill.
Some land-bound pilots compete in stunt competitions, some hook cameras to their craft to take aerial photos. Others have dropped as much as $22,000 on jet replicas that top 250 mph.
The enthusiasts also offer training sessions for rookie pilots who want to give the RC world a whirl.
"I sort of describe it as getting to experience flying without the possibility of losing your life in a crash," said Steve Weller, the groups president. "If I crash an airplane I'm safely on the ground, pick up the pieces, rebuild it and go again."
