Today's timesnews.net poll: Do you think Officer Mains was treated fairly in this incident?
A Kingsport police officer who hadn't logged on to his MySpace account since Aug. 15 has ventured back online after resigning his position as patrolman with the Kingsport Police Department.
Patrolman Eric Manis submitted his resignation after an internal investigation into MySpace Web site postings which amounted to what Kingsport Police Chief Gale Osborne called “unprofessional comments and perceived threats” against Fun Fest participants.
A press release announcing Manis' decision shortly before 5 p.m. Monday said "an appropriate internal and external review of the matter has been concluded, and there is no need for further action found by our investigation. This remains a personnel issue, and longstanding city policy is not to discuss personnel issues and therefore, there will be no additional statements about the matter."
Early in the investigation, Osborne told Timesnews.net, “First and foremost, we take it very seriously...and if we see that he’s in violation of the general orders, it’ll certainly be dealt with appropriately.” With the news of his resignation on Monday, effective immediately, it appears Manis resolved the matter in his own way.
Manis, who logged on sometime Monday, had not signed in to his MySpace since Osborne announced the department's intent to conduct an internal investigation into the content of his personal MySpace Web site.
Although his MySpace profile is now virtually empty, his "mood" remained "complacent" as of Monday evening. A profile quote visible even in private mode also had not changed as of around 6 p.m. Monday: "Don't argue with stupid people...they'll drag you down to their level and beat you."
On paid leave for the duration of the investigation, Manis, at home tonight after the decision became public knowledge, politely declined a request for comments.
"We respect his decision and thank him for his time of service with the Department," Osborne stated in the department's brief press release.
City officials were unavailable to comment on the development as government offices close at 5 p.m.
Kingsport police said Manis' former shift supervisor would not be available for any comments until tomorrow.
KPD still investigating 'perceived threats' on officer's MySpace site

Many people who use the computer and post in places like MySpace need to understand that once you put something on the web it never goes away. Large companies regularly search the web looking for things a person they might hire as an employee has posted out there. So what might be a really cool photo of you in your MySpace account doing something wild and crazy with your college buds, or a nasty comment about someone can come back to haunt you years later when you go for a job interview. Think before you post.
Ms. Mcnamara, the last thing the Sullivan County Sheriff's Dept needs is yet another opinionated arrogant officer in the ranks or in the facility itself. Though I'm sure that's quite the possibility. There's quite a bit of "housecleaning" to be performed at the Sullivan Dept already.
I still feel that this situation has been blown way out of proportion and don't agree that Mr. Manis should have to resign. I want to wish him well in his pursuit of happiness in his profession. I feel confident that he will continue to be an honest person, a successful police officer and will be a welcome asset to another department. Learn from this experience, move forward and don't look back. Sometimes consequences are not fair.
It seems that everyone who has responded so far is missing the point. A police office is held to a higher standard of conduct than those they are sworn to protect. I agree that they should be able to "blow off steam", but they need to do it in a private forum. By posting comments on "MySpace"-even though it was set to private, this officer set himself up for scrutiny. As a taxpayer, I expect our police officers to conduct themselves as professionals every minute of every day. If they cannot do this, then maybe they should find another profession.
So this is what we have been reduced to?What happened to freedom of speech? I don?t think expressing your opinion on a web page is a crime that would require a resignation. I have the same opinion of the fun fest activities in Kingsport, so should I be punished as well? I know that fun fest is a great investment for Kingsport and brings the city in lots of money, but it is a pain in the butt dealing with the traffic and crowds. I know from experience that it is a totally different when you have to work one of the stands or in this case protect the citizens. Lets face it people are rude and dealing with some many people all week long can take its toll on anyone. I believe that this officer should have been given a verbal or written warning. I know that there are other officers on the KPD that have done a lot worse things and are still on the force. BE REASONABLE!!!!!
In the 80's, over 20 years ago, I worked for the City of Kpt. All I can say is that this is still 'business as usual'. In my case, I was sexually abused by my superior, but I dared not say anything because I wanted to keep my job. I did the job 'they' told me to do and was still called 'arrogant' and 'not a team player'. My partner was functionally illiterate and unable to even completely read work orders, but when that person left the position as my partner to take another higher paying position, I was told it was my fault they left. I was reprimanded for calling to attention some really nasty behavior on the part of a person on contract with the city and after I left the city's employ, I was contacted again by folks who were open to doing something about the contractor's actions, which were still occuring. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I attended a meeting in city hall for folks who wanted to express their opinions about how the city was preparing to change the health care program for city workers. All I did was observe and not speak. They don't like workers who are 'too smart' or pay too much attention to how things are run in Kpt. J.D. Hickman was also at this meeting and spoke out- not too long after that, he was arrested for allegedly assulting a woman in her vehicle as it sat at a stop light on Stone Dr. At his trial, it became apparant that he was not the person who assaulted the woman, but was instead at his own home at the time. I realized that the Kpt. city government does not care if the employee is totally in the right- they will sacrifice a valuable employee to keep the 'citizen waaa-mbulance' from screaming down the highway! I wonder how many former city employees have a story similar to mine?
Why is it that an Officer of the Law can't have normal human feelings without being crucified. He has done nothing criminal like commit a felony, get arrested, or lie in court. But i forgot, those people get to go back to work, but Officer Manis blows off some steam and dont get to come back to work. I am sure that this resignation was forced, not voluntary! Police work is Officer Manis' life. Hey Sheriff Anderson, here is you another outstanding officer that we as tax payers have given thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of training, and his boss thinks he should go cause he blew off steam. All I can say to you, Mr Anderson is Merry Christmas from KPD, they just gave you another good one.
