Appalachia High School art teacher’s court date set in improper relations with student case

Published June 6th, 2007 | 1 Comments

WISE - A June 27 court date was set Wednesday for a Wise County teacher charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Naomi Miranda Peters, 26, 321 Stockton St., Gate City, was charged last week by Wise County Sheriff's Department investigators with the contributing misdemeanor during a probe of allegations Peters engaged in an improper relationship with a female student.

Peters teaches art at Appalachia High School and Appalachia Primary School.

Peters did not appear for her arraignment before 30th Circuit Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court Judge Greg Edwards on Wednesday. Matters were handled by her attorney, Carl McAfee of Norton.

Peters remains free under a $5,000 unsecured bond established by a Wise County magistrate after she was taken into custody without incident at the high school last week.

Chief Sheriff's Investigator Mike Holbrook said last week the pending charge against Peters arose during an investigation into the more serious allegations.

While interviewing a potential witness, another minor female student, Holbrook said the girl alleged that Peters instructed her to lie to police.

Holbrook said Peters and the alleged victim of the more serious allegations have denied accusations of an improper relationship.

Last week a school official said Peters has been employed by the county school division for two years and been assigned both years to the two Appalachia schools.

The misdemeanor charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor carries a maximum penalty of 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine.
