DUFFIELD - A development planned by Holston Medical Group for Duffield will bring at least 40 jobs paying almost double the area's average household income.
The $5.5 million project will create a new medical center in Duffield, officials with HMG, the Lenowisco Planning District and the Scott County Economic Development Authority announced Wednesday.
Phase one of the plan will begin within 30 days with the renovation and expansion of the Wellmont/Penn Virginia building to a 26,500-square-foot facility that will house six general practitioner offices; an outpatient diagnostic center with CT, mammography, ultrasound and bone densitometry; a physical therapy and rehabilitation center; and three consultation offices where obstetricians, gynecologists, gastroenterologists and rheumatologists will consult with patients.
In phase two, renovation of a building on the medical center campus will create a 4,000-square-foot data services facility. HMG will consolidate and store patient information at the site.
The new facility will be named OnePartner ATAC and will provide health care agencies throughout the region with access to health information technology.
"OnePartner is currently negotiating with several groups for the OnePartner ATAC to become their ‘center of excellence' for data management," said Dr. Jerry Miller, founder and president of HMG.
Talks began with HMG officials at the Lenowisco office in Duffield more than a year ago.
"I can't tell you how important this is to HMG and me personally," Miller said.
Miller practiced medicine in Scott County more than 20 years ago.
The new medical center will be named after a HMG doctor who has worked in Duffield for more than 25 years.
"Dr. (J. Bryston) Winegar has served the very deserving patients of Duffield, Virginia," Miller said. "With a desire of honoring his faithful service, we are pleased to announce the new facility will be renamed the J. Bryston Winegar Medical Center."
Two oversized checks were handed out Wednesday. Rick Siger, Virginia's deputy secretary of Commerce and Trade, gave a check for $150,000 from the Virginia Governor's Opportunity Fund for the development of the medical center. Another check for $150,000 was presented by Delegate Terry Kilgore, R-Gate City, on behalf of the Virginia Tobacco Indemnification and Community Revitalization Commission.
With infrastructure that includes high-speed Internet service provided throughout the e-corridor, state Sen. William Wampler, R-Bristol, said Duffield is competing for new technology-based jobs.
"We've set ourselves apart from others. We can compete with anyone when it comes to the technology industry," he said.
Kilgore said HMG's project in Duffield could lead others to invest in the area.
The Virginia Economic Development Partnership worked with Scott County, the Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority, Lenowisco and the Duffield Development Authority to bring the medical center to Duffield, according to the governor's office.
"As soon as I realized we had a chance to bring this wonderful HMG facility to Scott County, we focused our collective efforts and energies into making this happen for Southwest Virginia," Wampler said. "This builds on one of our most important economic clusters, health care, plus it brings world-class health assets to Scott County."
