BIG STONE GAP — Union advanced to the Region 2D volleyball tournament semifinals with relative ease Tuesday.

The Lady Bears (21-4) made quick work of Richlands (9-11) in the regional quarterfinal match. The 25-7, 25-8, 25-9 win over Richlands came courtesy of Union’s solid, balanced attack.

The Lady Bears advanced to play Mountain 7 District foe Gate City (19-10) in the Region 2D semifinals on Thursday at 8 p.m. back at Union.

Gate City advanced to the regional semifinals by knocking off Southwest District power Marion 25-22, 19-25, 25-18, 25-17 in their quarterfinal match.

The other regional semifinal match will pit Southwest District No. 1 seed Lebanon (21-10) against the district’s No. 3 seed, Virginia High, on Thursday at Union.

LADY BEARS ROLL

The Lady Bears recorded 46 kills in rolling to the quarterfinal victory over Richlands.

Emili Brooks scored the first Union point in the match and the Lady Bears never trailed in the three sets.

Brooks powered her way to 17 kills and seven digs to lead Union.

“I think we wanted more they did. And after the first set, they looked like they kind of gave up,” Brooks said.

Union coach Kim Moore said her team picked a good time to come up with a big game.

“You just never know what to expect in volleyball and I think our girls showed up ready to play,” Moore said. “We’ve just got to get back in the gym tomorrow and it’s just one day at a time.”

Meghan Blagg finished with 14 kills and two blocks, and Jayda Smith contributed 10 kills and four aces for the Lady Bears.

Zoe Brooks added 39 assists and four aces for Union, Audrey Gilliam finished with 16 digs and Pia Morgan came up with 10 digs.
