The Lady Spartans used their now-strong serve attack Monday to sweep Lee High at Eastside’s gym. Eastside (3-4) served up 21 aces in the 25-22, 24-20, 25-22 win.
STRONG WITH THE SERVE
“We struggled with our serve at the beginning of the season. We were not serving that many aces at the start of the season. We’ve really been working on our serves,” said Eastside coach Brianne Bailey. “Hopefully, that will help us down the road also.”
Cloey Bailey had a team-high eight aces for Eastside and Riley McCoy finished with five. The Lady Spartans also got 13 kills from McCoy, Anna Whited added nine kills and Eliza Johnson finished with 26 assists and 13 digs.
The Lady Generals (1-7) got 13 kills and 15 digs from Kaitlyn Cox, and Alyssa Werner added eight kills. They also got 18 assists from Cameron Baker, 19 digs from Hannah Reasor and 11 digs from Leia Lovell.
“We suffered with our serve-receive game. You can’t win if you can’t return the ball. That’s just trouble,” said Lee coach Alexis Carson.
HOLD ON TIGHTLY
Eastside’s service game and front-line play were strong in all three sets, but the Lady Spartans still had to withstand vicious comeback attempts from Lee.
Eastside led 19-9 in both the first and third sets before the Lady Generals made things interesting. Lee fell behind by 10 points in the first then outscored Eastside 13-6 before dropping the set. The Lady Generals lost the third in similar fashion.
In the second set, the Lady Spartans led 20-16 late before Lee surged again, matching Eastside point for point down the stretch.
“We did a good job digging out of the holes, but the holes were too big,” Carson said. “When you dig yourself that big of a hole, it’s just too big to dig yourself out of and that’s what happened to us.”
Eastside opens Cumberland District play Thursday with a key road trip to Rye Cove. Both squads are perennial district front-runners.
Lee is back in action Tuesday at home against cross-county foe Thomas Walker.
