Eastside survives Lee, bat incursion for first win

BEN HUR — When the Eastside volleyball team has a reunion five or 10 years from now, one of the games the players will likely talk about will be the one Tuesday night against Lee High.

Not about the fact that the Lady Spartans battled through a grueling five-set match and held off a determined Lee squad in a 23-25, 25-22, 25-15, 23-25, 15-8 win.

Not about the win being the first of the season for Eastside.

That all happened and will probably be a portion of the discussion if the Lady Spartans find themselves talking about the match sometime in the future. But the biggest part of the discussion will likely start with something like, “Remember the bat at Lee High?”

After the teams split the first two sets and Eastside built a 7-4 advantage in the third, the squads got an unanticipated break of about 10 minutes or so after a bat flew into the gym.

The uninvited visitor flew around the gym to the gasps and awe of most in the attendance. It sometimes swooped close to the playing surface as well as up and down the bleacher steps. But the creature always maintained a healthy distance from spectators and participants alike.

After the bat was coaxed into flying through an open door and back into its natural environment, the match resumed with Eastside unfazed by the distraction.

The Lady Spartans rolled on through the third set to take a 2-1 lead.

Lee battled back tough in the fourth set to send the contest to a deciding fifth.

Behind the power of their front line, the Lady Spartans (1-2) used a 6-0 scoring spree to build an 8-1 lead. Lee made another charge and cut it to 11-8 before Eastside finally pulled away to seal the win.

“We played well tonight. We played a lot more consistent,” said Eastside coach Brianne Bailey. “It’s going to take a while to get that flow and get that chemistry, but I’ve seen improvement with each game.”

Eastside got 12 kills and 30 digs from Anna Whited, and Reiley McCoy added 12 kills and Hailey Mitchell 10. The Lady Spartans also got 40 assists from Eliza Johnson and 24 digs from Kacie Jones.

Kaitlyn Cox’s 21 kills and 20 digs set the pace for Lee (1-3). Cameron Baker finished with 31 assists and 11 kills and Hannah Reasor totaled 18 digs.
