The Lady Blue Devils finished the match having doubled the Lady Generals’ kill production 46-23.
“It being a big game, we did a good job staying controlled,” said Gate City coach Amy Reed. “We did a good job handling the pressure in our first district game. It was a fun match. We’re just going to keep working.”
Lee (2-3, 0-1) has seven seniors and three juniors back from the team that shared the conference title with Gate City last season. The Lady Blue Devils won that playoff match.
“Lee is a good team. You can’t take them lightly,” Reed said. “We’re not done seeing them. Both teams are just getting started.”
Senior libero Erica Lane came up big on defense for Gate City (3-1, 1-0) with 19 digs, also serving three aces.
“We just came out really pumped up tonight,” Lane said. “We’ve been looking forward to this match. Lee is a good team; we battled them all the way last season.
“Coach Reed is always talking about keeping the ball in play so that’s what we did tonight.”
Freshman Sarah Thompson led Gate City with 16 kills and six digs, and Kaley Jenkins, a sophomore, piled up 40 assists. Sophomore Kinslee Hammonds finished with 13 kills, Aubrie Penley added nine kills and freshman Brooklyn Smith had eight.
Sheridan Herron had eight kills and Baylee Robinette six for Lee. Senior Claudia Alsup came up with 13 digs and senior Arielle Tritt recorded 22 assists.
“We didn’t show up tonight. We had no discipline,” said Lady Generals coach Alexis Carson. “We don’t have any discipline in practice either, so it was not unexpected.
“Gate City came ready to play. They were ready when they hit the floor.”
