The ballet company is preparing to stage “The Nutcracker,” a holiday classic, in December. Because shows typically sell out, one additional show has been added this year to meet the demand.
“Our ‘Nutcracker’ has seen sold out performances for the past three years … at Wellmont Performing Arts Center,” said Bertina Dew, executive director of Kingsport Ballet. “Once we began turning people away, we felt it was time to open up additional performance days.”
How to attend
Public performances will take place at Northeast State's Wellmont Performing Arts Center on Dec. 13, 14 and 15 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 16 at 2:30 p.m. The school performance will be staged Dec. 13 at 10 a.m.
Tickets are now on sale at www.kingsportballet.org or on the Kingsport Ballet Facebook page. Purchasers may print their tickets at home or pick them up at will call the night of the performance.
All seats are numbered, assigned and sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets will be available at the door, provided they have not sold out prior to performance dates. It is strongly advised to purchase tickets early.
About the performance
Kingsport Ballet's traditional Russian version of “The Nutcracker” is full of holiday warmth, elegance and the magic of the season. The show will once again feature an impressive roster of professional guest artists, as well as soloists from Kingsport Ballet and cast members from the Kingsport Ballet School.
During last year's “Nutcracker,” Kingsport Ballet awarded scholarships to a number of lucky children in the audience. Due to the popularity of that program, the company will once again offer the scholarships, but with a slight change to the process.
The company will provide opportunities for the selected students to attend an audition process for a chance to win. A limited number of full-year and half-year scholarships will be available by audition. Children who attend any of the public performances will be eligible to win a chance to audition at a designated time in January 2019.
Children ages 4-11 can attend the traditional Clara's Tea and Chocolate, which takes place just prior to the Saturday evening performance on Dec. 15. The tea party will be held from 5-6 p.m., and tickets are sold separately at $10 per child by calling Kingsport Ballet at (423) 378-3967 or visiting www.kingsportballet.org.
Parent chaperons can attend the tea party free of charge. This popular event has the capacity to host 60 children, and tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis.
In addition, Kingsport Ballet will feature an expanded ballet boutique at the theater during “Nutcracker” performances as an extension of its in-house store, kbBoutique. Unique, handmade gifts, ornaments, holiday cards and gift wrap are available for purchase.
