KINGSPORT — Every 65 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease.

In Tennessee alone, more than 120,000 people have the disease, and that statistic continues to rapidly increase, according to the Alzheimer’s Association.

That trend has led the Kiwanis Club of Kingsport to offer its Alzheimer’s caregiver conference on a yearly basis, rather than every other year.

This year’s conference will be held in September and will feature Jolene Brackey, a nationally known speaker and the author of “Creating Moments of Joy.”

“There are just more and more dementias or related situations diagnosed all the time, and it is very expensive. … It just shows you what the need is,” said Bill Sade of the Kingsport Kiwanis communications committee. “So we’re glad we have the capability to provide this information every year.”

Conference details

The conference, held in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Regional Resource Center and AARP of Tennessee, will take place Sept. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with registration beginning at 8 a.m.

As in years past, the event will be held in the St. Dominic’s Catholic Church Parish Life Center, located at 2517 N. John B. Dennis Highway in Kingsport. Breakfast, lunch and snacks are included in the registration cost.

Throughout the program, Brackey will share her extensive experience in caring for people with Alzheimer’s disease and give participants tips on what does and doesn’t work. The event is geared toward family and professional caregivers, and vendors are also invited to come and showcase their products.

Registration

Like last year, participants are invited to register for the conference online at www.kingsportkiwanis.org. The cost is $50 for family caregivers, $95 for professional caregivers and $100 for vendor tables with one attendee.

As an added incentive, professional caregivers can receive 6.5 Continuing Education Unit (CEU) credits for attending.
