KINGSPORT – It’s almost time to lace up your work boots and head to Warriors’ Path State Park for the annual Day of Service.

The event, which will be held April 28, invites volunteers to clean and landscape various areas of the park, including Darrell’s Dream Boundless Playground.

“We hope people will come and help us maintain the Darrell's Dream Boundless Playground because it is a unique facility that facilitates equal access to the great outdoors and encourages inclusion of all people in learning and play,” said Sarah Leedy, park manager.

Leedy said this is the 11th year of the event. It is organized by the Friends of Warriors’ Path State Park, in partnership with Tennessee State Parks and a number of local sponsors.

About the playground

Darrell’s Dream Boundless Playground is a place where children of all abilities can learn and play together. The first phase of the playground opened at Warriors’ Path in April 2007. In 2012, phase four – the Palmer Center Foundation Amphitheater – was completed.

Warriors’ Path was the first state park in the nation to provide a Boundless Playground for visitors, according to a press release. The playground complex includes an area for children ages 2 to 5, along with a playground area for children ages 5 to 12, a sand island and an interactive maze.

In addition, there is an eight-station interactive Braille Trail, with a theme of C.S. Lewis’ “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” Last but not least, there is a fully accessible tree house where children can learn about the history of Warriors’ Path State Park and the native wildlife that live there.

About the Day of Service

During the event, volunteers will plant greenery, mulch, pressure wash all playground equipment, weed and clean up areas of the park.

The park will remain open to visitors as normal during the event, but access to the Boundless Playground will be restricted from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

If it rains, the volunteer clean-up will be rescheduled for the following Saturday, May 5.

Who can help?

Neighbors, churches and community groups are invited to volunteer at the Day of Service. Close to 200 volunteers are expected to participate in the event.
