Pat Summitt Foundation, Legal Aid offering free wellness checkups to Alzheimer’s, dementia patients

Staff Report • Apr 1, 2018 at 8:30 PM

KINGSPORT — The Pat Summitt Foundation will soon be bringing wellness checkups and no-cost legal assistance to people in the Tri-Cities who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

On April 18, the foundation and Legal Aid of East Tennessee will offer two back-to-back programs in Kingsport and Johnson City for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and their caregivers.

The programs will cover a number of topics, though there will be a special emphasis on estate planning documents.

“Legal wellness is as important as physical wellness, especially for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and their caregivers,” said Sheri Fox, executive director of Legal Aid, in a press release. “Alzheimer’s is a progressive brain disease with symptoms that worsen as time passes and ultimately, render a patient unable to take care of his or her own medical and financial affairs.

“Obtaining the necessary legal documents before progression of the disease makes it impossible reduces stress and makes it less likely that your family and caregivers will have to engage in more complicated and costly legal actions later.”

What to expect

Each program will feature an Alzheimer’s education presentation, followed by a session during which attorneys will guide attendees through Legal Aid’s wellness checkup.

The wellness checkup helps individuals identify any legal problems they may be facing — sometimes problems they might not even be aware of.

Following the wellness checkup, up to 10 pre-screened, pre-registered individuals coping with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia, or individuals with family members coping with Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, will be able to meet one-on-one with a lawyer to complete certain estate planning documents.

Thanks to a grant from the Pat Summitt Foundation, there will be no charge for the lawyer’s time in meeting with the individuals and preparing the legal documents.

“We are very excited about partnering with Legal Aid of East Tennessee to offer these programs,” said Patrick Wade, executive director of the Pat Summitt Foundation, in a press release. “Legal Aid is an outstanding organization with decades of experience in changing lives throughout East Tennessee.

“Teaming up with Legal Aid on these particular ‘Summitt Series’ programs will enable us to do two things about which Pat Summitt was very passionate: educate the public and serve others.”
