Patrick Henry rules at Region 1D championships

COEBURN — Saturday’s Region 1D track and field championships did not have many surprises, particularly at the top.

Coming off last year’s VHSL Class 1 championship and this winter’s Class A/AA indoor track state title, the Patrick Henry boys continued their domination by cruising to a regional championship at Alumni Stadium.

The Rebels finished with 149 points, far ahead of second-place Thomas Walker, which totaled 86 points. Holston (64), Castlewood (52) and J.I. Burton rounded out the top five in the team standings.

Not to be outdone by the boys, Patrick Henry’s girls — who finished second last spring in the state team competition — dominated their Region 1D meet by outdistancing second-place Burton by a 170-58 margin.

Chilhowie’s girls finished third with 55 points, followed by Northwood (40) and Twin Valley (38).

“I’m just glad we had a good day,” said Patrick Henry’s Mark Love, who coaches both squads along with Sarah Helton.

Love said both the boys and the girls are set on winning state team championships in Elkton on June 2.

“The boys are ranked second and the girls are ranked first (among VHSL Class 1 schools). And it’s us and Auburn,” Love noted. “There’s nobody else who is going to come near either one of us.”

MULTIPLE EVENT WINNERS

Patrick Henry’s boys won seven of the meet’s 13 events, including two gold-medal finishes from Connor Buchanan. Buchanan won the 100 in 11.26 seconds and the triple jump with a leap of 41-01.

Thomas Walker’s Jake Davis also was a double winner with titles in the 200 (23.19) and the high jump (6-0).

In the girls’ competition, Patrick Henry’s Casey Quillen took the shot put title (34-02.25) and the discuss crown (105-09).

Distance runner Catherine Grossman won the 1,600 (5:43.52) and 3,200 (13:11.48) for Patrick Henry. The Lady Rebels also got a pair of victories from Maggie Buchanan, in the 200 (26.41) and the long jump (15-08).

Holston’s Ryland Harrison won both the 300 (50.74) and the triple jump (34-04.5) titles, and Twin Valley’s Kim Lester took the 100 (13.37) and the 400 (61.32) races.

MORE POINTS

Patrick Henry will add to its regional-winning points total next week. Its teams are the only squads in the region with pole vault participants and will be competing at Tennessee High on Tuesday, weather permitting.
