Tribe sweeps Big 7 team track titles

Tanner Cook • Apr 28, 2018 at 1:48 AM

KINGSPORT — Dobyns-Bennett’s Jeamy Williams had a phenomenal day at the Big 7 Conference Track and Field Championships on Friday.

Williams took home the gold in the 100, 200 and 400 and ran a leg on the winning 4x400 relay. A dominant force for D-B all year, Williams’ individual 30 points helped the Indians to the boys’ team title.

“Personally, I think my best event is the 200, but my coaches disagree and would say something different,” Williams said. “I can get my speed up to maintain it through the race and it’s not too long of a distance.”

Williams’ recent impressive running has been sock-less. He said he didn’t wear them about three meets ago and his strong performances leave him not wanting to ruin a good thing.

“It’s a sign of good luck,” he said.

The Lady Indians’ Sasha Neglia continued her reign in the distance events, sweeping the 1,600 and 3,200 with relative ease and getting a two-second personal best in the 1,600, clocking a 4:56.45. Her time puts her among some of the greats in Northeast Tennessee history, and you have to look back before 2010 to find times that are faster.

“The season started out a bit rocky with the 1,600, but I was really determined to break 5 this time,” Neglia said

D-B’s girls also captured the team crown behind solid scoring from Emma Russum, who took runner-up status in both distance events; Courtney Whitson, who got the throws sweep in the discus and shot put; and Lily Griffith, who took home the high jump title.

The Tribe boys also got a similar effort in the field events from Tanner Henry — who won the high jump and barely missed on a try at a personal best of 6-foot-6 on his last attempt — and Drew Christian, who took the shot put title.

For others on Friday, good things came in threes.

Science Hill’s Jeb Jones, Daniel Boone’s Maria Chellah and Volunteer’s Whitney Christian each won three Big 7 championships.

“I’m really happy that I’m done,” Jones said after winning the 3,200-meter race for his third victory of the day. “Going into the day, I really had to stay focused and not freak out. I was really happy with how I ran today. I thought the toughest event going into the day was going to be the 2-mile, but I thought it was the 800 in the middle.”

Jones also won the 1,600 and 800 titles to complete a tough distance trio.

Chellah won the individual title in the 300-meter hurdles, which is not her traditional event, and earned a runner-up finish in the 200 meters by less than a half-second. She was also part of the winning 4x800 and 4x400 relay titles for the Lady Trailblazers.

“I hadn’t really done the 300 hurdles seriously since my freshman year,” Chellah said. “We’re just trying to figure how I can best score in the future meet.”

Christian won the long jump and 100 hurdles and was part of the 4x100 relay team. She also placed second in the 300 hurdles.

“This year, I think the 100 hurdles are my best event,” Christian said. “Last year, it was the 300. It’s hard to decide which one I want to do because I do well in both events. Some of my races could’ve gone better today, but I’ll take what I can get.”

Ashley Salyers claimed gold in the triple jump to give the Lady Falcons a sweep of the jump titles.

Tj Patton was able to pull off a convincing hurdle double win for Science Hill, cruising in both the 110 and 300.

The Hilltoppers finished as runner-up in both the boys’ and girls’ team standings.
