Neglia makes smashing debut in 2-mile run

JOHNSON CITY — Making a debut in anything is never supposed to be easy.

Apparently, Dobyns-Bennett’s Sasha Neglia did not get that memo.

Neglia blew away the field in the girls’ 2-mile run Friday night on Day 1 of the fifth annual Tri-Cities Track Classic held at Science Hill. Winning by nearly a minute, she crossed the finish line in a meet record of 10 minutes, 41 seconds in her first race ever in the event.

She eclipsed the previous meet record by more than 15 seconds and did it by distancing herself from the competition within the first 200 meters, blasting the opening lap in 1:10.

This was nothing new to the sophomore, the two-time defending TSSAA Class AAA cross country champion. She is known to start out quickly and build gargantuan leads that never seem to shrink.

“I felt like it went well. I like the race,” Neglia said. “I felt like I could run faster, but it will be later in the season. I gave what I had today. I’ve had some really good training over the winter and felt like I’ve been working really hard.”

Neglia blitzed the first mile of the race in 5:14, which would have put her in the middle of the pack of the boys’ race during their first mile.

The other D-B runners in the girls’ 2-mile — Emma Russum, Ellie Hall and Gracie Allen — fed off the quick pace Neglia set and delivered second-, seventh- and eighth-place finishes.

Other top finishes for D-B saw the boys’ 4x200 relay team finish second, the girls’ 4x200 relay place third and Lily Sewel finish sixth in the girls’ triple jump.

Other notable performances on the day saw the Volunteer girls place fifth in the 4x200 relay and Cherokee’s Austin Kirkpatrick and Sullivan South’s Zach Johnson take fifth and sixth, respectively, in the 2,000-meter boys steeplechase. Johnson finished sixth by winning the slower section of the event.

Day 2 of the meet begins at 8 a.m. with field events and sprint prelims.
