Area athletes shine at TriCitiesSports.com Relays

STEVE WILMOTH, TriCitiesSports.com • May 9, 2017 at 10:43 PM

JOHNSON CITY — One meet record fell and several others were challenged at the 39th running of the Lupus Foundation of America TriCitiesSports.com Relays on Monday on the Sydney Smallwood Track at Science Hill’s Kermit Tipton Stadium.

After just missing Justin Fuqua’s 2007 mark of 14.70 with a 14.80 in the 110-meters hurdles last year, Patrick Henry’s Alex Davenport bettered the former Elizabethton runner’s 10-year-old mark with a 14.68.

“I’m very happy with the meet record,” Davenport said. “I really wanted to get it last year, so I’m glad I could get it this year.”

Defending his meet title in the hurdles served somewhat as an encore for Davenport. He won the long jump in addition to the hurdles last year and, before taking to the track Monday, Davenport had been named the meet’s Most Outstanding Male Field Event Performer after winning the long jump (22-3) again and finishing second in the triple jump (41-1).

“It was a pretty good day,” he added. “I could have gone a little farther without the wind in the long jump. But it was a good jump. It qualified me for nationals, which was my goal coming in today.”

Several other meet marks came under fire as well. David Crockett’s Addisyn Rowe had three attempts at 5-6 in the high jump to join Krista Hare (Sullivan East, 1986 and 1987), Stacy Weaver (Sullivan East, 1990) and Meagan Lyons (Greeneville, 2005) in the record books.

Both pole vault marks were challenged Daniel Boone vaulters. Ryan Jacomet had two tries at 14-0 — set by Dobyns-Bennett’s Brandon Lawson set in 2007 — and Caitlin Cutshall had a look at the 10-6 cleared by Science Hill’s Savannah Hirst in 2014.

D-B’s Bryce Barrett, who broke the 400-meter record last year with his time of 48.72, came tantalizingly close to joining former Tennessee High runner Jennifer Cannon with three standing meet records.

The Nebraska signee won the 100 in 10.98, just 0.12 seconds behind John Patrone’s (University High) 2011 mark of 19.86, and also crossed first in the 200 at 22.05, just 0.07 shy of the 21.98 record set by Morristown West’s Quentin Greenlee in 2007.

Abingdon’s Michelle Mitchell swept the shot put (36-2½) and discus (111-11) to earn the award as the Most Outstanding Female Field Events Performer.

“Michelle is an endless worker and she does it all by herself,” said Lady Falcons track coach Brook Mitchell. “We don’t have another shot or discus thrower on the team. She’s done that for two or three years now. She’s a very talented young lady, a very hard worker, and earns everything she gets.”

Marion’s Callee Cox, who took home the field event award last year, put together another worthy performance this year. The James Madison signee won the long jump with a season-best 17-1, finished second in the high jump (5-2) and logged a fourth-place finish in the triple jump (34-0½).

“I hit 17-1 on my first jump and then scratched the next three,” Cox noted. “But the 17-1 was really good for me. The triple jump was close to my season best and I’ve been hitting 5-2 on the high jump all season. I’m ready to move up to 5-4 or 5-6.

“It’s awesome to compete against these people from a different state,” she added. “You see some new people and new competition. That’s always great because we never go to big meets like this. It’s always local and the same people.”

The meet’s Most Outstanding Runner awards went to a pair of sprinters using track to better themselves for other sports at the next level. Chattanooga soccer signee Chloe Arnold won the 100 (12.73) and 200 (26.37) and led Tennessee High to a victory in the 4x200 relay (1:45.87) and to a runner-up finish in the 4x100 relay (51.39).

“This is exciting. I’m not used to running track and being in this kind of atmosphere,” Arnold said. “I started running track for my running form and being more efficient on the soccer field, but then I got here and realized it was fun and I enjoyed the competition being more of an individual sport. The individual sprints are the complete opposite of soccer.”

The boys’ award went to Science Hill relay specialist Tate Overbay. The Bluefield College football signee was the only Hilltoppers athlete to log legs on the winning 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400 relay teams.

Overbay anchored the 4x100 with Caleb Duncan, Trey Garland and T.J. Patton and the 4x200 with Duncan, Patton and Akshay Bakshi. Overbay ran third with Alex Crigger, Nate Jackson and Garland in the 4x400.

“I think it’s great we did that with those relay wins,” Overbay said. “It was a lot of good competition. We got to see teams from Union and Marion and all over. It was a good solid meet.”

Grayson Hurd and Whitney Christian led a solid effort by coach Jim Ailshie’s Volunteer squad. Hurd won the triple jump (41-9¼), and Christian placed first in the 300 hurdles (48.21) and runner-up to Union’s Kalea Clark (15.75) in the 100 hurdles (16.61).

Clark was a double winner. The Lady Bears standout also took the triple jump at 36-2½. Union’s Justin Barnett was first in the boys’ shot with a toss of 48-8¾.

D-B’s wins came from Meg Davis (2:26.77) in the 800 and Ashtyn Hagood (5:27.93) in the 1,600, Milligan signee Jordan Murray in the 300 hurdles (40.48), Dee Williams the 400 (51.56) and Tanner Henry with a personal-best 6-4 in the high jump.

“When I went up on the 6-4 jump I was like, ‘This can’t be it,’ but it turned out it was,” Henry said. “The second jump at 6-5, I felt it, I thought that was going to be it.”

Henry came in as the fourth qualifier at 6-3 behind a pair of 6-6 leapers and a 6-4.

“I was really intimidated at first, but as we went, my confidence slowly built and I started feeling it,” he added.

Other Daniel Boone winners included East Tennessee State signee Ben Varghese (4:18.10) in the 1,600, Matt Huff (2:02.66) in the 800 and Maria Chellah (59.66) in the 400.
