Methodically, without displaying too much emotion, the Lady Blue Devils sailed through Monday’s VHSL Class 2 girls tennis quarterfinal match, dispatching Giles 5-0 at Weber City Primary School.
“Giles is a good, solid team. But they’re a young team and I think our players stepped up where we’re a little bit older and a little smarter at this level because we’ve been here,” said Gate City coach Delonda Spivey. “We were sort of ready to get this match on and move on to the next one.”
Gate City advanced to Monday’s Class 2 semifinals against the winner of Tuesday’s state quarterfinal between Wise Central and Radford at Radford.
If Radford defeats Wise Central, the state semifinal match would likely be played at either Virginia Tech or Radford University on Monday. A Central win would mean the match would most likely be played at either Weber City or Virginia-Wise.
Regardless of which team Gate City faces in the semifinals, the opponents have some history.
Gate City has beaten Central four times this season, including a 5-0 win last week for the Region 2D championship.
The Lady Blue Devils and Radford are frequent opponents in the state tournaments, including last year’s state semifinal match, a 5-3 win for the Lady Bobcats. Gate City and Radford have a combined 19 girls tennis state championships.
Gate City wasted no time picking up the pace and recording a strong decision in its favor on Monday, dropping just two games in the sweep of Giles.
Sarah Arnold at No. 1 lost one game against Emma Freeborn on the way to a 6-1, 6-0 victory and sophomore Amelia Jennings surrendered the only other game but still beat Haley Hanson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.
Kaley Jenkins took a 6-0, 6-0 win over Madison Gilmer at No. 2, Sydnee Reed defeated Ella Osborne 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 and Lady Blue Devils clinched the match at No. 6 singles when Macy Dishner topped Haley Whortey 6-0, 6-0.
