Blue Devils' Ervin heads All-SW Va. boys squad

Gate City’s Zac Ervin started his senior year on a roll.

The Wofford signee led the Blue Devils through the first half of the season before missing eight games because of knee injury.

Ervin returned to Gate City in the postseason and picked up right where he left off.

The Gate City senior, who led the Blue Devils to the VHSL Class 2 state semifinals, has been named as the Times News All-Southwest Virginia boys basketball player of the year.

Ervin was an undeniable force for Gate City when he was on the floor, averaging 32.8 points per game for the Blue Devils.

Eastside coach Patrick Damron, who guided the Spartans to their second straight appearance in the VHSL Class 1 state championship game and another Cumberland District championship, has been named as the coach of the year.

FIRST TEAM

BRADLEY DEAN

The Gate City junior built another chapter to his high school career after a solid season during his sophomore year.

Dean stepped up in Ervin’s absence and continued to be a force when Ervin was gone.

He finished the season averaging 24.1 points and 5.0 rebounds per game.

ETHAN POWERS

Powers was a team leader for Eastside, leading the Spartans all the way to the state championship game.

The junior averaged 20.8 points, 2.1 assists and 2 steals per game.

NICK LIVINGSTON

Livingston came into his own in a starting role for Eastside.

The senior leader finished the season averaging 12 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game in the Spartans run to the state championship game.

CALEB WILLIAMS

In his senior year, Williams was a coach on the floor for the Raiders on the way to a share of the Cumberland District championship and the Region 1D championship.

Williams averaged 18.4 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 49 percent from the floor and 84 percent from the free throw line.

GABE COUNTS

Counts became the first male basketball player at Ridgeview to top the 1,000-point scoring mark in his career this season.

The senior had a strong season, averaging 20.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.1 steals per game for the Wolfpack.

ELIJAH HAYES, DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR

The Wise Central junior had a solid year both defensively and offensively for the Warriors.

Hayes averaged nearly three steals and over one block per game in the season, while scoring an average of 13.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.

ANDY JONES, UNDERCLASSMAN OF THE YEAR

The Union freshman made the most of starting role as a member of the Bears.

During his first year on the varsity level, Jones averaged 15.1 points and 5 rebounds per game for Union.

SECOND TEAM

NOAH GARRISON

The junior averaged 17 points and 3.0 assists per game for Union.

CALEB YEARY

Yeary proved to be a team leader for Thomas Walker.

The sophomore averaged 18.1 points per game for the Pioneers, while scoring over 30 points in two games this season.

HOUSTON THACKER

The J.I. Burton senior was one of the most athletic players on the basketball court this season.

Thacker, who plans on playing football at Virginia-Wise this season, averaged 14.2 points and 8.1 rebounds this season. He also connected on 41 percent of his shots.

CHASE LOVE

Chase Love surpassed the 1,000-point career scoring mark this season.

The senior finished averaging 18 points and 8.0 rebounds per game for the Eagles this year.

CAYDEN MCCONLEY

McConley was a senior leader for John Battle, averaging 18.5 points, 5.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.2 steals per game for the Trojans.
