KINGSPORT — The Dobyns-Bennett girls soccer team beat crosstown rival Sullivan South in a non-conference contest on Thursday night at Indian Highland Park 7-1.

Claire Chapman led the Lady Indians with a hat trick, and all of her goals came in the second half.

“I got around people and got a few open shots,” Chapman said.

Anna Kate Breeding started the scoring for D-B (3-2-1) in the fourth minute off an assist from Brantley Coggins.

Coggins came back with a goal of her own soon after with an assist from Callie Stidham. Jessica Winkler had the final goal of the first half on a breakaway when she got behind the Lady Rebels defense.

Even though the game was smooth sailing for the Tribe on the scoreboard, it was frustrating because of the multitude of offsides calls that negated some would-be scores.

“Credit to South in the first half for holding a really high line,” D-B head coach Blake Rutherford said. “We had to make some adjustments and we played much better the second half. It was a great team effort.”

Haylee Tilson added the final goal for D-B in the 74th minute.

The lone South (1-2-2) score came in the final moments when Rachel Phillips snuck one past goalkeeper Cathie Love.

Overall, Dobyns-Bennett had 24 shots with 15 on goal.

Sullivan South mustered three shots with two on goal.

South goalkeepers Kat Johnson and Emily Maxwell combined for eight saves.

Sullivan South will travel to Elizabethton on Tuesday for a conference matchup while D-B will go to Daniel Boone. South’s game will begin at 6 p.m. while D-B’s contest will start at 5:30 p.m.
