EMORY — The Mountain 7 Conference boys and girls tennis team semifinals got under way on Thursday afternoon on the campus of Emory & Henry College. The girls semifinals saw the Abingdon Falcons make a clean sweep of the Wise Central Warriors to advance to today’s finals against Gate City.

The boys semifinal between Abingdon and Union was quite exciting, with the Bears coming out on top 5-4.

The boys match made it through three matches before the rain set in and play was moved to John Battle High School to continue on dry courts.

GIRLS SEMIFINALS

The defending state 3A champion Falcons made quick work of the Warriors, winning 5-0 on the team side.

Anna Campbell won over Sarah Dotson 6-0 and 6-1.

Maggie Miller won over Caitlynn Maggard. Watson defeated Funk. Goodman over Hughes Carly Hargroves won over Tellie Stafford.

The Falcons did not even need to play the doubles matches in order to clinch.

Gate City has beaten the Falcons once this year. The championships will take place at Emory & Henry again.

BOYS SEMIFINALS

The boys semifinals had quite the interesting scenario.

The Bears went up quickly 3-1 on the Falcons with two singles matches to be finished. The downpour then came in a hurry at Emory and the teams retreated to the buses.

After about 30 minutes, the teams decided to move the remainder of the match to John Battle in hopes of playing on dry courts.

Justin Falin lost a tough, three-set match on the tiebreaker that would have clinched it for the Bears in the singles, but he ultimately came up short. His score was 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) in a match that lasted nearly three hours, counting travel time.

The Falcons rallied to tie Union at three matches apiece and forced an exciting sequence of doubles.

Union was able to pull out the close victory, 5-4 and advance to play John Battle today at Battle for the conference team title.

Battle won both matchups on the season, sweeping the Bears each time.
