Warriors senior Mullins finalist for Award for Excellence

Dalton Mullins, a senior at Wise Central, is one of 25 finalists for the U.S. Army/NFL Football Hall of Fame Award for Excellence.

Mullins, a Carson-Newman football signee, will be recognized by the Pro Football Hall of Fame at Central on May 23 during a “Gold Jacket Ceremony.”

Mullins will also be going to the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony in August, where the winner of the national award will be announced.


The Gate City Boosters Club will host the annual Big Blue Boosters Golf Tournament on June 8-10. Proceeds are used to benefit all athletic teams at Gate City High School.

This year alone, the club provided free transportation to 110 students to the Class 2 boys state championship basketball game in Richmond.

The club has also provided meals to numerous sports teams at the school and has purchased equipment for several teams.

The tournament, featuring a four-man, select-shot format, will be played at Scott County Park. The entry fee, which includes lunch, is $50 per person.

Virginia-Wise softball pitcher Taylor Brandts was named to the 2018 Division II Conference Commissioner's Association D2CCA All-Atlantic Region second team on Monday.

In her senior season, Brandts went 17-11 with three saves. She led the Mountain East Conference and ranked eighth nationally with her 1.04 ERA.

Brandts tossed 27 complete games, including a no-hitter against West Liberty, and registered 207 strikeouts in 196 innings. She ranked sixth in the nation with 10 shutouts.

Brandts was a D2CCA All-Atlantic Region first-teamer last season.
