North's Nelson sets sail for state tournament

GREENEVILLE — Sullivan North’s Adam Nelson is bound for The ’Boro.

Nelson, who helped lead the Golden Raiders boys tennis team to its first district and regional championship in decades, captured the Region 1 Small School singles championship on Monday with a hard-fought, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 victory over District 2 champion Ethan Estes of Cumberland Gap.

Nelson, who knocked off Luke Crum of South Greene 6-4, 6-4 in Monday’s opener at Tusculum College, will be one of only eight players competing for the state championship on Thursday, May 24 in Murfreesboro.

“I have never had a player work as hard as Adam,” North coach Bryan Upshaw said. “Every sprint we ran this year he finished first, every advice I gave he tried, and anytime anyone on our team needed something he was there with a helping hand. He is a great team player and great young man.

“I am happy to see all his hard work pay off. He is making memories that will stay with him his entire life.

“These are accomplishments I will never forget,” Nelson’s coach added. “I’m so proud of him!”
