GREENEVILLE — The Dobyns-Bennett girls tennis team is back atop the region for the first time since 2012.

The Lady Indians soundly defeated Greeneville 7-0 on Friday to capture the Region 1-AAA team championship at Tusculum College.

“This is very exciting and it really means a lot to me because it’s my first coming in as head coach,” Dobyns-Bennett coach Sara Wallingford said. “I’m so proud of these girls for the work they’ve put in and the way they played today. The upcoming matches are going to be very exciting in the next two weeks.”

The Lady Indians got off to a good start when the doubles team of Willa Rogers and Lainey Hill took the day’s first match 8-0 over Macy Kennedy and Sydney Finchum. Emily Cai and Sydney Berry fought their way to a 9-7 victory against Sydni Lollar and Katie Leonard to stake the Tribe to a 2-0 lead after the doubles matches.

From then on, it was all Lady Indians. None of the singles matches was ever in jeopardy of going three sets.

Rogers defeated Lollar in the first singles match and was welcomed off the court with a loud cheer of “Roll Tribe!” from the coaches and onlooking parents. Every D-B player from Cai to Taylor Guske to Berry and finally Hill was welcomed with the same cheer.

The rest of the Lady Indians swarmed Hill in jubilation after she closed out her title-clinching match against Kennedy.

“It’s been a great experience this year and being part of my first regional championship,” Hill said. “A lot of my teammates have stepped up this year. We have a lot of freshmen this year and we’ve played together so much and really bonded well as a team. We’ve played every day together and come together as a team, playing for one another. We all have really big dreams and want to do well at the state level.”

In 2012, the year of their previous regional team title, the Lady Indians took runner-up honors at state, and now they are just a few steps away from getting to the highest level again.

D-B will play in the sectional next week.
