TSSAA unveils classification plan for 2017-21

STEVE WILMOTH, TriCitiesSports.com • Oct 18, 2016 at 9:10 PM

s expected, significant changes are in the works for the next round of TSSAA reclassification.

On Tuesday afternoon, the TSSAA officially released sport-by-sport classification plans for the 2017-21 classification cycle. All changes to the current classification methods were approved at a TSSAA Board of Control meeting in July.

For football, six classifications will again be used, but the Super 32 (Class 6A) format was scrapped in favor of six evenly split classifications. As a result, Volunteer and Cherokee move up to 5A along with Tennessee High, David Crockett and Daniel Boone. Dobyns-Bennett and Science Hill remain in 6A. Sullivan South, Sullivan Central and Sullivan East stay in 4A and Sullivan North will again be in Class 2A.

Basketball, baseball and softball remain in three evenly split classifications among the 335 Division I schools, although enrollment changes to Sullivan North and Sullivan Central move the Golden Raiders down to Class A and Sullivan Central to Class AA.

Volleyball stays with three classifications but splits evenly among 288 participating schools. As in basketball, baseball and softball, though, Sullivan Central goes to Class AA and Sullivan North to Class A.

The most significant changes affect soccer, track and field, cross county, golf and tennis.

For soccer, the TSSAA is adding a classification layer; previously Class A and Class AA were combined into A/AA. Each of the three classification levels will be split evenly among 258 participating schools.

With the expansion to three classes, soccer sees significant movement with University High, Hampton and Happy Valley in the new Class A and Sullivan Central, Volunteer and Cherokee in the new Class AA. Class AAA leaves only five schools from District 1-AAA — Tennessee High, Dobyns-Bennett, Science Hill, Daniel Boone and David Crockett — and three from District 2-AAA — Morristown East, Morristown West and Jefferson County.

Even more significant changes are coming to those previously split into Class AAA and a combination of Class A/AA. With 322 schools fielding teams in at least one sport of track and field, cross country, golf and/or tennis, the TSSAA has split the classification for all into a “Large School” class — schools with enrollments of 754 students or more — and a “Small School” class — schools with enrollments of 753 students or fewer.

As a result, Unicoi County (796), Elizabethton (819), Sullivan South (887), Sullivan Central (897) and Sullivan East (941) are lumped in with the likes of Dobyns-Bennett (2208) and Science Hill (2248).

Among the schools earning Small School designations are University High, Sullivan North, Happy Valley and Johnson County. Tennessee High, David Crockett, Daniel Boone, Volunteer and Cherokee are all in the Large School classification.

Wrestling will continue to operate as a two-classification sport and bowling as one. Wrestling, however, will remain as Class AAA and a combined Class A/AA with the Class A/AA combination coming from basketball, softball and baseball Class A and Class AA classifications.

Schools have until noon on Tuesday, Oct. 25 to notify the TSSAA of their intention to move up in classification in any of the plans. Schools may play up but must do so in all the sports that fall within a classification plan.

After the deadline, the TSSAA will set district and regional assignments. Schools disagreeing with such assignments may request an appeal sometime before the TSSAA Board of Control meeting on Nov. 17, when the 2017-21 classification plan will be officially approved.
