JOHNSON CITY — Canisius scored early and often in stopping the East Tennessee State baseball team’s three-game winning streak, pushing across six runs over the first three innings on its way to a 9-2 win Friday in the teams’ series opener at Thomas Stadium.
Jesse Puscheck and Jimmy Luppens went 5-for-10 with three runs scored and four RBIs to power the Canisius offense. The Golden Griffins (4-3) outhit the Bucs 9-6.
The reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champions got seven strong innings from left-handed starter Alex Godzak (1-1), who held ETSU (5-4) to one run on five hits and struck out three.
Senior left-hander Clinton Freeman (0-3) suffered the loss after allowing six runs on seven hits in three innings of work.
Bucs freshman Zach Mize recorded his first collegiate home run in his Thomas Stadium debut. Jeremy Taylor drove in the other ETSU run with a double in the ninth.
Freeman finished 0-for-5 at the plate, ending his streak of reaching base safely at eight games.
The Bucs and Griffs return to action Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. ETSU right-hander Jimmy Nesselt faces Canisius righty Rohn Pierce.
