KINGSPORT — The Dobyns-Bennett girls were down, but they were never out.

Sasha Morrisette made sure of that.

After Morristown East took a one-point lead with just under six seconds left in the game, the Lady Indians inbounded the ball to Alex Anderson, who calmly hit Morrisette in stride and D-B’s dynamic guard converted a driving layup at the buzzer to give the Tribe a 50-49 victory in the quarterfinals of the Region 1-AAA basketball tournament.

“When she made that shot and there were five seconds left, a couple of us held our heads and then we just looked at each other and said, ‘It’s not over,’” Morrisette said. “That’s when we knew we were going to win.”

The Lady Indians nearly forced a turnover on Morristown East’s final possession, but Lauren Blaylock came up with the ball and laid it through the hoop to give the Lady Hurricanes the lead. The only problem was that they left a little too much time on the clock, and the Tribe was able to drive the length of the floor with about three-tenths of a second to spare.

Morrisette led the way with 18 points and Anderson added 17 for the Lady Indians (21-9), who managed to edge out East (14-17) in a close game for the third time this season.

Jordan Hayes matched Morrisette’s 18 points to lead the Lady Hurricanes, but she fouled out when Morrisette drew a charge with 1:20 remaining in the game. Blaylock added 16 points for East.

The Lady Indians will face Jefferson County in the regional semifinals. The teams split a pair of regular-season games.
