WISE — Twelve days after losing on the road at Wise Central, Union’s boys basketball team returned and ended the Warriors’ season.
The Bears used a run at the end of the second quarter to build a 12-point halftime lead and maintained a double-digit cushion for most of the second half en route to a 62-47 victory in the first round of the Clinch Mountain Conference 40 tournament on Wednesday night.
Union advanced to face Gate City on the road in the conference semifinals on Friday night.
Logan Mullins and Jake Barnett scored 15 points each to pace Union.
Tanner Hall added 11 points, all from the foul line and most at a crucial time. Hall went 10-for-12 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter to help the Bears seal the win.
Caleb Mills scored a game-high 22 points to propel Central, which never overcame a nearly four-minute scoring drought right before halftime.
The Lady Warriors had better luck in their contest, cruising to a 56-27 win over the Lady Bears.
Central coach Robin Dotson went to his deep bench early and often, using all 13 of his players in the blowout victory. Khelsea Salyers led the way with 11 points for the Lady Warriors, who face John Battle in the conference semifinals on Thursday in Gate City.
Summer Begley scored 11 points to lead Union and Kristen Bishop added 10.
