BRISTOL, Va. — Virginia High’s Noah Walker and Ben Couch both posted double-doubles and the Bearcats upended visiting Gate City 74-64 on Friday night in a rescheduled boys basketball game.

Walker scored 19 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Couch added 16 points and 13 boards.

“This was a big win for us tonight,” said Bearcats coach Barry Reed. “Now we’ve beaten every team in (Conference 40), so I feel that the ball is in our court as postseason gets under way.”

Virginia High led by as many as 15 points in the second half but the Blue Devils (15-5) made a late surge that pulled them to within three at 66-63 with 2:22 left in the game.

The Bearcats responded by hitting 8 of 10 free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.

“This was a growing experience for us tonight,” said Gate City coach Scott Vermillion. “We learned not to get down by 10 early to a team like Virginia High.”

Tour’e Fudge added 16 points and Trey Land 11 for Virginia High.

Dylan Jenkins had a game-high 27 points for the Blue Devils with Nick Qualls adding 13 and John Reed Barnes 10.

The Gate City boys and girls games with Wise Central, which were postponed from Friday night, were reset for Monday. The super begins at 4 p.m.
