Vermillion registered his 300th career win.
A banner was unfurled after the contest to mark the historic occasion.
“I really didn’t know anything special was planned,” said Vermillion, whose overall record is now 300-121.
“We made just enough hustle plays in the fourth quarter to pull this one out.”
Trailing 34-32 with 3:54 left in the third quarter, Gate City (11-4) got 3-pointers by John Reed Barnes, Nick Qualls and Caleb Herron that allowed the Blue Devils to rally and take a 42-38 lead into the crucial fourth period.
North (5-16) came back to get within three points, 50-47, at the 4:20 mark of the fourth quarter, but the Golden Raiders could get not closer.
“Tonight we played like we’ve been hoping,” said North coach Jay Gregory. “There’s a difference between losing a game and getting beat. Tonight we got beat.
“But our kids really got after it and that’s something to build on.”
Dylan Jenkins led Gate City with 21 points. Nick Qualls added 11 and Herron had 10. Michael Collier pulled down nine rebounds for the Blue Devils.
Grayson Ball had a double-double with a game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds to lead North. Trevor Williams scored 20 for the Raiders.
