JOHNSON CITY -- The East Tennessee State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics released information Wednesday that junior forward Ron Giplaye will be out indefinitely following open heart surgery to correct a congenital cardiac abnormality.
Facing what was a life-threatening condition, Giplaye underwent the medical procedure late last week and is currently recovering in Johnson City. At this point, every indication points to Giplaye making a full recovery.
“Ron was diagnosed with this condition in the summer,” said ETSU head coach Murry Bartow. “Our medical staff immediately began the process of coming to a solution. Considering the best interests of Ron, it was determined that he needed to have this surgery. At this point, everything has gone well, but he will be out indefinitely. The top priority right now is for Ron to recover. We will worry about basketball and his availability to play at a later date.”
ETSU Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Richard Sander said he was proud of those that have been involved in Giplaye’s evaluation and treatment.
“Ron’s health and the well-being of all our student-athletes is the top priority of our department,” Sander said. “I want to commend our sports medicine staff and Coach Bartow for acting immediately and in the best interests of Ron.”
