MADISON, Wis. — Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen will hold off announcing a starting quarterback until the season opener in two weeks. The 23rd-ranked Badgers host Massachusetts on Aug. 31.

Andersen said his starting quarterback will be officially named when his pick jogs onto the Camp Randall Stadium field, though No. 1 signal-caller's identity may become evident in practice.

Curt Phillips looked sharp running a two-minute drill during an open portion of practice Saturday, while Joel Stave didn't pick up a first down running the second unit. Wisconsin also has junior-college transfer Tanner McEvoy, a dual threat QB, who was struggling earlier in the week.

Andersen said Saturday the race remains wide open, adding that Monday's scrimmage will be important in creating separation at competitive spots.

Phillips, a sixth-year senior out of Sullivan South High School who has overcome numerous injuries, started six games last season after Stave sustained a broken collarbone.
