On July 20, monster trucks will return for their fifth season along with Global Rallycross Championship, or GRC, that will bring its dirt racing to BMS for the first time during Bristol Motor Speedway's Monster Truck Madness and Global Rallycross Doubleheader.
Viewers of all ages are going to enjoy the car-crushing extravaganza and the heat from Megasaurus, a gigantic, metal dinosaur that crushes and eats cars while spitting fire from its mouth.
“I think it will be a great show that fits with the racing lovers at Bristol ... [It’s] fun for the family for both racing and showcase,” said Lynsey Wilson, communications manager for BMS.
The fun will begin when the gates open at 2:30 p.m., with a Monster Truck pit party and a GRC Paddock party. The party is for the enthusiasts who want to see trucks and cars as well as meet the drivers. Then, from 4 to 8:30 p.m., the Monster Truck and GRC events will take place.
During the main event, GRC racing cars will compete against each other but with a twist. Global Rallycross Championship uses cars unlike typical race cars. They are built around production-based vehicles that are improvised to race on dirt, jump ramps and drift. The race itself consists of a series of elimination heat rounds until there are 10 drivers left. The drivers who remain will compete one last time in a winner-take-all race to be the Global Rallycross Champion.
The track will be transformed so the cars will race across a dirt-covered track and jump over ramps as well as navigate through watery areas. Monster trucks will race each other through obstacles as well as do freestyle driving. Monster trucks will do their racing and freestyling in the infield of the Speedway.
When the show is over, the audience may stay for the post-event pit party, where there will be have another opportunity to visit the trucks and cars, along with the drivers, whom many do not get to see. No special ticket or additional payment is needed to attend the pre-event or post-event parties.
Tickets for the doubleheader are $25 for those 11 and older, and $5 for children 10 and younger. Saturday, July 20 is when the event begins, but ticket-holders may see the practice runs for GRC on Friday, July 19 from noon to 7 p.m.
