Cox, the No. 26 seed going into match play, downed Andrew Bailey of Cleveland, Ohio 4 and 3.
“I got off to a fast start,” said Cox. “I chipped in for birdie on the first hole and was 1 up right away.”
Cox continued to put the pressure on Bailey and built a 3 up advantage after six holes.
“All the advice I’ve been given about match play is to get on top early,” said Cox. “It really does make things easier when you are playing from ahead.”
With five holes left in the match, Cox led 4 up and finally closed out the match on the 15th green.
Thursday morning at 9:20, Cox will take on No. 6 seed Paul McConnell from Garland, Texas in the Round of 32. McConnell downed Sam Straka of Valdosta, Ga. 4 and 2.
“A lot of the top seeds got knocked out in the first round,” said Cox. “So I’m guessing that seeding doesn’t mean a whole lot right now. I’ll just keep playing the way I’ve been and see what happens.”
Thursday morning’s winners will play in the Round of 16 in the afternoon.
