Junior shortstop Chad Pinder was the first Hokie to go when the Oakland Athletics took him Thursday in the Competitive Balance Round B with the 71st overall selection. He became Virginia Tech’s highest draft choice since pitcher Joe Saunders went to the Los Angeles Angels with the 12th pick in the 2002 draft.
Tyler Horan and Jake Joyce followed on Friday. Horan, a redshirt junior outfielder was chosen in the eighth round (252nd overall pick) by the San Francisco Giants. Joyce, a senior reliever went in the ninth round (286th pick) to the Washington Nationals.
On Saturday, the final day of the draft, junior pitcher Eddie Campbell went in the 15th round (447th pick) to the Seattle Mariners; senior pitcher Joe Mantiply went in the 27th round (816th pick) to the Detroit Tigers; and junior pitcher Colin O’Keefe was selected in the 33rd round (997th pick) by the Los Angeles Angels.
The six picks in the 2013 draft trailed only the 2010 draft for the number of overall picks (eight).
