“Outdoor Nation Summit” Friday, June

7-9, 2013. This summit is for those that are between 18-28 years of age. Camp

at Natural Tunnel State Park for free and receive meals for free. Attendees

will work to identify the region’s pressing outdoor issues and development

strategies to solving these challenges. Pre-registration is required by logging

onto http://bit.ly/vspsummits. Those

that register will receive a free t-shirt.

“National Get Outdoors Day” Saturday,

June 8, 2013. Join Virginia State Parks as they provide a variety of programs for

their community and for families to participate in that will take place in the

outdoors. Natural Tunnel State Park will be providing a variety of programs

from canoeing, to caving, to night hikes. The park will be providing hiking

trails; several picnic tables with grills to use for lunch or dinner, the pool

will be open, along with the chairlift. A lot to do so get outdoors today!

“Wild Cave Tour: Bolling” Saturday, June 8, 2013 departing from the

Visitor Center parking lot at 2 p. m. Experience the underground world of caves

on a guided tour. View firsthand the unique formations and historical remains found in the parks cave. This tour will allow guests to see evidence of earlier cave explorers and inhabitants. This tour involves more effort and ability due to the crawls and small passages found within the cave. Pre-registration is required by calling the Stock Creek Interpreter Center at (276) 940-1643. Cost is $15 per person or $12 per person for a group of 10 or

more.

“Night Hike” Saturday, June 8, 2013 departing from the old campfire ring at 8:30

p.m. Join park staff as they take you on a nightly adventure. Come and see what

goes bump in the night. Please no flip-flops, crocs, or backless shoes. Hiking

shoes or tennis shoes preferred. Free Program.

“Kayak the Clinch: Longhunters Run” June 9, 2013 departing from the Visitor Center at 9:30 a.m. This 9-mile flaot takes guests through some beautiful scenery on the way to the Virginia-Tennessee border. Most of this

float is through slow moving water where guests will have the opportunity to

view several scattered shoals along the trip. Half way through the trip the

group will stop for a short period of time to stretch and eat a quick snack.

Towards the end of the trip, during low water levels, there is a class 2 rapid.

Minimum age 13 years. Trip length approximately 5 hours. Cost: $25 per person.

“Canoe the Clinch: Cherokee Run” Sunday, June 9, 2013 departing from the Visitor Center parking lot at 2:30 p.m.Our traditional run, 5.5 miles in length, begins at Hill Station and passes through a succession of riffles before entering a series of slower-moving pools. Herons, ducks, and kingfishers are just some of the birds usually encountered, along with occasional sightings of deer, muskrat, otters and other river inhabitants. Enjoy a snack, or take a refreshing dip in the river at our ½ way point. Although geared to the novice, more experienced canoeists without the time for one of the longer trips will find this run an excellent way to experience the Clinch River. No children younger than five. Cost is $15 per person or for a group of 10 or more it is $12 per person. Pre-registration is required by calling the Stock Creek Interpreter Center at (276) 940-1643.

“Stock Creek Passage” Wednesday, June 12, 2013 departing from the

Visitor Center parking lot at 10 a.m. See Natural Tunnel from the

inside! Participants will enter the Natural Tunnel by hiking from the Stock Creek

Interpretive Center to the North Portal of Natural Tunnel, then wading Stock

Creek to the center of the Tunnel, following the path of early visitors who

traversed the Tunnel prior to construction of the railroad. This walk can be

strenuous. Wading attire, a flashlight and a wading staff are highly

recommended. NO sandals, flip-flops, or crocs. Cost: $5 per person. Trip

length: 2-4 hours. Minimum age: 8 years. Pre-registration is required by

calling the Stock Creek Interpreter Center at (276) 940-1643.

“Snorkel the Clinch” Wednesday, June 12, 2013 departing the Visitor

Center at 2 p.m. Spend a warm summer morning feeling the coolness of the

Clinch River water pass by while crawling around the river floor looking for

freshwater mussels, crayfish, and other river life. Groups will experience

firsthand a small full grown fish called Darters. View how fast river snails

can move under the water. No children under 7 years of age. No pets. Tennis

shoes or water shoes required. No sandals, flip-flops, crocs, or backless

shoes. Trip length: 1 hour to 1 hour and

30 minutes. Transportation to and from river is provided. Trip is limited to 15

participants. Cost is $5.00 per person. Pre-registration required by calling

(276) 940-1643 or for more information. Program starts in June and ends in

September with weather depending.
