Roundup: Union, Gate City, Central, Eastside, Burton among Region D softball winners

Union 2, Lebanon

BIG STONE GAP — Union’s Region D, Division 2 softball tournament victory over Lebanon on Tuesday was Taylor-made.

With runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh inning, Taylor Gibson singled to short to drive in the game-winning run for the Lady Bears in a 2-1 win over the Lady Pioneers.

After Autumn Garrett got on with a one-out single in the seventh, Alisa Hafemeister followed with a double to right-center. Gibson then came through with the clutch hit that sent Garrett across home plate.

Demi Reynolds (14-7) picked up the win on the mound and went 2-for-3 at the plate. The Lady Pioneers’ lone run, which came in the first, was unearned.

Brandee Childress had an RBI single in the fourth for Union’s first run. The Lady Bears (15-8) play John Battle, a 21-0 winner over Grundy on Tuesday, today in the semifinals at Big Stone Gap.

Gate City 5, Virginia High 1

BRISTOL, Va. — Jordan Lovelace knocked in a pair of runs to help No. 7 Gate City upset No. 2 Virginia High in the Region D, Division 2 quarterfinals.

The Lady Blue Devils play Wise Central today in the second semifinal at Union.

Gate City (10-12) scored three runs in the top of the first and freshman pitcher Kasey Repass (6-6) held the Lady Bearcats to just one run on five hits.

Lovelace and Kendra Dougherty each finished 2-for-4 with a double, and Kitty Raymond was also 2-for-4 at the plate.

Tiana Macias put in a 2-for-3 effort with a double for Virginia High.

Wise Central 9, Lee High 3

WISE — Logan Reynolds blasted a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth to break open a one-run game, sending the Lady Warriors (16-5) into a Region D, Division 2 semifinal matchup with Gate City today at 6:30 p.m. at Union.

Khelsea Salyers was 3-for-4 with two RBIs, Hayley Wyrick went 2-for-4 and Reynolds also finished 2-for-4 for Central.

Lee High scored a run in the third and two more in the fifth off a Courtney Tabor two-run shot. Jessica Crabtree was 2-for-4 with an RBI and Kelsey Skaggs went 2-for-3 for the Lady Generals.

Eastside 10, Twin Springs 1

COEBURN — Samantha Cole recorded three hits to lead Eastside past Twin Springs in the Region D, Division 1 quarterfinals.

Cole went 3-for-4 and knocked in a run. Brianne Atwood was 2-for-3 and Madison Powers had two RBIs for the second-seeded Lady Spartans (19-3), who face J.I. Burton today at 5:30 p.m. in the semifinals.

Lindsay Dean (15-3) and Samantha Cole combined inside the circle to hold No. 7 Twin Springs to three hits.

Shiloah Darnell, the Lady Titans’ lone senior, went 2-for-3 and knocked in a run.

J.I. Burton 9, Rye Cove 0

NORTON — Tiffany Cole turned in another pitching gem to lift J.I. Burton past Rye Cove in the Region D, Division 1 quarterfinals.

The No. 3 Lady Raiders (11-12) host Eastside today in the second semifinal.

Cole (11-8) recorded her third straight shutout, tossing a one-hitter with two walks while striking out 10.

Jaz Bay went 2-for-3 and Cassie Page ripped a base-clearing double in the fifth to give Burton some breathing room.

Taylor Bishop broke up Cole’s no-hit bid for the Lady Eagles.


Gate City 8, Wise Central 0

GATE CITY — Madi Garrett and Mary Jones scored two goals apiece and the Lady Blue Devils outshot Lee High 15-0 to cruise in the Region D quarterfinals.

Megan Edwards and Madison Vaughn had a goal and an assist, and Brooke McDavid and Ireland Hensley added one goal each.

Kyra Jessee kept a clean sheet to record the shutout for Gate City (15-0-1), which will face the Grundy-Lee High winner on Thursday in the semifinals at Sugar Hollow Park in Bristol.


Gate City 8, Lee High 0

GATE CITY — The Blue Devils’ Neth Gardner added to his impressive season goal total with four more in a Region D quarterfinal win over Lee High.

Tucker Alley, Joey Canter, Wesley Byrd and Tanner Alley each found the back of the net for top-seeded Gate City (16-0-0), which plays Virginia High on Thursday in the semifinals at Sugar Hollow Park.


Union 8, Lebanon 7

LEBANON — Sixth-seeded Union scored eight runs over the final two innings to come back from a six-run deficit and shock No. 3 Lebanon in the Region D, Division 2 quarterfinals.

The Bears play Honaker, an 8-2 winner over Eastside, Thursday in the semifinals at Virginia High.

After scoring three runs in the sixth, Union continued its offensive explosion in the seventh. Nathan Rasnick tied the game with a two-RBI single that plated Hunter Neece and Austin Baker before Will Hubbard knocked in Tanner Hall and Rasnick for the go-ahead runs.

Hall finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, Hubbard went 2-for-3 and plated three runs, and Ethan Villiard and Ben Baugh added two hits each.

John Duty doubled and knocked in two runs for the Pioneers.

Honaker 8, Eastside 2

HONAKER — Makenzie Phillips drove in three runs to help No. 2 Honaker beat Eastside in the Region D, Division 2 quarterfinals.

Eastside grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third but Honaker answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame and three more in the fourth.

Phillips and Payton Ball led the Tigers with three hits each.

The Spartans were led by Caleb Riner with two hits and two runs scored.
