Eastside 9, Lee High 0

COEBURN — Eastside ace Matt Green tossed a three-hit shutout and the seventh-seeded Spartans beat No. 10 Lee High 9-0 on Monday in the first round of the Region D, Division 2 baseball tournament.

Eastside (15-8) travels to No. 2 Honaker today for a quarterfinal game at 6 p.m. The Spartans split a doubleheader with the Tigers two weeks ago.

Green (8-1) got the complete-game win after allowing just three hits and a walk while striking out 13.

Nick Sturgill, Wes Yeary and Caleb Riner recorded two hits apiece, each with a double, to lead the Spartans at the plate. Sturgill drove in two runs and Riner plated one.

The Generals couldn’t get their bats going and committed four errors to hurt their cause.

Gate City 2, Grundy 1

GATE CITY — Brandon Baskette hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift No. 8 Gate City to a Region D, Division 2 first-round win over No. 9 Grundy.

The Blue Devils (5-18) take on top-seeded Virginia High tonight at 7 in Bristol.

Baskette’s winning base knock, one of just two hits off the Golden Wave’s Charles McCoy (2-6), scored Cory Franklin and Hunter Wolfe.

Kyle Graham and Franklin combined on the mound to hold Grundy (10-10) to a single run on five hits. Franklin (2-5) got the win in relief.
