BLACKSBURG — The first NCAA baseball tournament regional at Virginia Tech's English Field features three Big conference teams: Oklahoma of the Big 12, Connecticut of the Big East and Coastal Carolina of the Big South.
The host Hokies (38-20), who fell to No. 1 overall NCAA seed North Carolina 4-1 on Sunday in the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament championship game, meet the Huskies (40-19) at 5:30 p.m. in Friday's second game on the Blacksburg campus. The Chanticleers (37-21) and Sooners (40-19) open the regional at 1 p.m.
The last seed in the eight-team Big East field, UConn completed its impressive run to the conference tournament title with an 8-1 victory over Notre Dame that secured its NCAA berth.
Oklahoma won four straight games on its way to its first Big 12 tournament championship in 16 years, defeating Kansas 7-2 on Sunday for the title. Coastal Carolina fell to eventual tournament champion Liberty in the Big South tournament.
The 64-team tournament features 16 four-team, double-elimination regionals. Best-of-three super regionals will be held next week, with those winners moving to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
