Watkins' big day launches Lady Indians to Class AAA sectional track title

KNOXVILLE — Dobyns-Bennett’s Adriana Watkins won two events and contributed to a winning relay to lead the Lady Indians’ track squad to victory at the TSSAA Class AAA Section 1 Finals at Hardin Valley on Saturday.

Watkins broke a school record, winning the 300 hurdles with a time of 45.79. She collected the gold in the triple jump with a bound of 36-11¾ and grabbed a third-place finish in the 100 hurdles.

Watkins joined teammates Krystal Derr, Mercedes Bright and Shannon Stroud on the winning 4x100 relay, clocking a 48.32.

The Lady Indians won the team championship with 102½ points. Maryville was second with 79.

Sullivan Central’s Emily Williams covered a lot of ground for the Lady Cougars, winning the 800 (2:19.52), the 1,600 (5:01.38) and the 3,200 (10.45.73).

Tennessee High’s Ashlee Mitchell was also impressive, collecting a sectional championship in the shot put (38-5½) before sprinting off to win the 100 (12.47).

Volunteer’s Emily Armstrong won the long jump with a leap of 17-5¾ and Tennessee High’s Samantha Gudger took high jump gold by clearing 5-2.

In the boys’ meet, Dobyns-Bennett’s Devaun Swafford won the long jump with a bound of 21-9. Science Hill’s Hunter Boone took the triple jump at 45-4¾. Cherokee’s Grant McCracken won the shot put (55-4) and the Hilltoppers’ Justin Grant placed first in the discus (168-0).

Volunteer’s Sam Barton was second in the 300 hurdles (39.0) and third in the 110 hurdles (14.83).

D-B finished third overall in the boys’ meet with 62 points, despite the absence of star sprinter Malik Foreman, who tweaked a hamstring at the recent Times-News Relays.

Knoxville West won the team title and Hardin Valley was second.
