Tourney roundup: Lady Indians win, East and North boys fall

BRISTOL, Tenn. — Dobyns-Bennett rallied with five runs in the bottom of the third inning and went on to eliminate host Tennessee High 7-2 in the first round of the District 1-AAA softball tournament Saturday.The Lady Indians (23-15) advanced to play Science Hill on Monday at 7:30 p.m.The Lady Vikings jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first but the Lady Indians answered two innings later.Makaylah Darnell led off with a walk, Madi Kilby and Cydnee Morrisette singled and Tennessee High committed four errors and had a passed ball to help the Lady Indians score their runs.The big inning ended when Makayla Frye was tagged out at home on a Darnell single.D-B got another run in the fifth, capped by an RBI single by Brianna Patterson, and Kilby led off the sixth with triple and was knocked home by Abby Stratton.Darnell finished 3-for-3, and Kilby, Morrisette and Frye added two hits each. Frye knocked in a pair of runs.Marissa Honeycutt picked up the win inside the circle, allowing two unearned runs on three hits and three walks while striking out nine.Mackie Carr was 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the Lady Vikings (15-19).

BASEBALLElizabethton 9, Sullivan East 8MILLIGAN COLLEGE — Down to its last out with nobody on base and trailing by four runs, Elizabethton rallied to tie it in the bottom of the seventh, and then overcame a one-run deficit in the extra inning for a dramatic District 1-AA tournament victory.After the Patriots’ Austin White scored in the top of the eighth, Quincy Jackson’s long sacrifice fly tied the game. Chris Lanthorn won it with a slashing walk- off RBI single down the right field line in the bottom of the frame.Jackson finished with three hits. Eric Carter had two hits and three RBIs for the Cyclones (23-10).The Patriots (18-11), who play Johnson County Sunday at 6:30 p.m., got two hits each from Brady McGrew and Will Ellis. Tanner Whittaker knocked in two runs.Johnson County 4, Sullivan North 3MILLIGAN COLLEGE — Johnson County rallied for four runs in the fifth to beat Sullivan North in a District 1-AA elimination game.Jacob Henson’s RBI single started the rally and he scored the tying run by stealing home on the back end of a double steal for the Longhorns (7-15).Daniel Helm then delivered the eventual game-winning hit, an RBI single that made it 3-2.The Golden Raiders (8-21) scored a run in the bottom of the sixth and threatened to tie the game. But Longhorns pitcher Ryan Mahala got a pair of clutch strikeouts to preserve the win.
