Doane pitches NCAA-best 9th complete game of year for Bucs, who sweep UIC

CHICAGO — Kerry Doane got back to doing what he does best in the opener for a 7-3 victory and the East Tennessee State baseball team won 6-5 in extra innings in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader against Illinois-Chicago on Saturday in the Windy City.Doane (10-1) threw his NCAA- leading ninth complete game in the opening win against UIC. The senior right-hander allowed three runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out seven on 125 pitches.The Buccaneers had 12 hits, with Jeremy Taylor, Dylan Tritsch, Andrew Green, Clinton Freeman, Derek Niesman and Chris Riopedre recording two apiece. Freeman drove in three runs.In the nightcap, ETSU kept hitting the ball, racking up 15 hits as the Bucs took an early 3-0 lead and then scored the winning run in the top of the 11th.Green connected on the first pitch he saw in the final inning and sent it over the right field fence for his fifth homer. Tritsch, Green and Alex Reynolds led the Bucs (27-19) with three hits each.Will Chesney (3-2) got the win with 4 1-3 innings of relief. Freeman picked up his eighth save after working a scoreless 11th.Tyler Detmer had a pair of doubles and drove in a run for UIC (2-24).The teams conclude their series Sunday, with first pitch at 1 p.m.
