Summitt led the Lady Vols' program for 38 seasons (1974-2012), compiling 1,098 victories. The university said she will continue to serve the team and its coaching staff this year in a variety of ways, including as a liaison to the athletic director, on-campus recruiting and serving as a mentor to players and staff.
"We are excited to have Pat Summitt continue to be affiliated with our athletics department, and specifically our women's basketball program, which she built into the finest program in the nation," Dave Hart, the vice chancellor and athletic director, said in a statement. "Her continued example of leadership and courage sends an everlasting message to our student-athletes, coaches and staff."
The Hall of Famer moved into the role of head coach emeritus in April 2012 after stepping down as the Lady Vols' coach. Summitt completed her final season after announcing in August 2011 that she had been diagnosed with early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type.
